The bottom of that hill looks like a bunch of dead grass!

Thanks for the birthday wishes...

I just picked up a fiberglass hood, 2 rust free fenders and 2 rust free YJ half doors for $200 last night (they were so rust free I drove 90min to get them!!). I will post some pics of the fiberglass hood I am starting with and we can compare I need to repair the drivers front edge because there is a 6" long crack. And reinforce the side with some 6oz Fg.

Let the games begin!

Awesome Dude! That's a great score. Why don't you donate the half doors to me as a payment for all the valuable "expertise" you have gained while reading my thread!?

In my opinion, 6 oz mat is going to be too much for a crack. Sanding down the 1 1/2 oz mat was chore enough, especially to blend. Post up some pics.

oh sorry for not explaining......

Im going to use a strip of 6oz to strengthen the side (sort of like you did) and then I have some 1/2" and 3/4" long strands that I mix with my epoxy and i will fill the crack with that.

I will post pics. I really only wanted doors, and I like fiberglass work so I thought I could use this hood too, and the fenders were in such good cond. I might put them on also! lol. 2 sets of fenders, 2 hoods, and 2 windshield frames will soon be up for sale to put money towards a trailer.

It is better to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission! RIGHT?? C'mon... everyone of you has used that theorum at least once in your life! Well... that's the concept I am working from... BTW- I am home today!!

Since Bondo said "get it off" that's what Clay and I did. Clay did most of the sanding to remove my screw up last Monday. The hood has been air-drying in the shop since then with the hopes that the solvents will gas off. I went out this morning and took a piece of 80 grit and hand sanded the hood. The purpose is two-fold. I wanted to remove more Bondo (maybe it will gas off faster with the surface opened up), but I also needed to give the hood a little more tooth. It had been sanded so much it was like a baby's you-know-what! I was concerned that the primer would not stick.

It's a beautifully cool day with a little more breeze than I would like, but she's gonna get primered anyway. 30% chance of rain today with 70% tonight.

Here's where we are at...

Same old side reference shot.

Next shot should be primer.

Uh... Beth just noticed what I was doing and told me to wait for Clay. So I'll let Clay do the painting. I'll just get everything ready so he can run out, shoot it, and get back to school work.

You just can't help yourself can you? It is hard to back away from something. Hey it's your birthday, tell Beth to cut you some slack. On second thought, if you do leave my name out of it. I already have one member's wife that isn't too pleased with me on here, that's plenty.

Happy Birthday and enjoy the day off!!!

Thanks, Jim. I started running a fever last night, and then I made 4 trips to the BR between 3:00 and 6:30! So I called in. I didn't feel like facing all those inmates while only feeling halfway... know what I mean? Do you think it was Jeep withdrawal?? Feeling much better now!

Glad you're feeling better. I got in trouble by recommending the guy buy new tools. I think she thinks I'm instigating a bad thing, but we know better.

Clay took a break from his school to work on his Jeep. YAY!! Made me happy. Y'all haven't seen him on it for awhile. He had a Biology quiz last night, and he really doesn't like Biology! Poor kid!

After reading up on FG prep on a Corvette forum I realized that we would be making a mistake if we didn't finish under the hood too. So Clay came outside, hand-sanded the top some more with 80, and I hit the underside with the sander. The idea is to just knock down the rough stuff and coat with something durable. Don't know what yet... any recommendations? We finished the sanding and degreasing and washed it all down with water. We also discovered, while inspecting the underside, that some of the reinforcing glass is looking somewhat rotted/aged. So we're planning to do a little repair in this area since the hood gets a lot of wind stress.

While it dries, Clay got busy on his fenders. We worked on that until he had to come inside to work on his Technical Writing. So I am in withdrawal again!

Clay washing the hood.

Sanding the underside with 60 grit.

A wee bit of a scrub bruch. I have a nice, big carwash brush. But, BEHOLD, I have an 18 YO with his own truck! Where is my carwash brush??

Clay removes the screws from his fender mold. How does he sit like that?

Preps for last layer of glass.

Checks his fit.

Applies the resin.

Done! Let it dry.
