Sounds to me like your rings are shot. As far as what you do about it, I have a lovely 258 you can buy . Depends on how much money you want to sink into the project. Using the 258 out of your 7 is basically free, but might give you problems in the future. If you did an engine swap you might as well rebuild whatever motor you drop in, and I would expect the conversion to be a bit more expensive then you plan. I think the easiest/cheapest route would be to rebuild the 258. I got all the parts and machining for around $700. If you took this route you could throw some rtv on the engine in the 5 to get the leak to stop, and rebuild the 258 in your 7. Then you wouldn't be down a vehicle.

You need the vehicle for Clay, I'd pull the engine from your 7, and put it in Clays 5. A weekend job.
Sounds like a lot of blow by, (normally blue smoke) Clays is white ( steam) from what you said. Any oil in the water or vice-versa?

Reasoning on your 258. Budget, minimal down time, your 7 isn't going to be a driver for a least 6 months or better.

Another idea , transfer the license to the XJ along with the insurance. I know it's Fallon's jeep, but you need three vehicles. This will give you some time for the swap.

Also a compression check on Clays 5, to see where your at.
The 4.3 swap requires, as you know , the bell housing, radiator, flywheel (unless the 4.3 comes from a S10 with a standard tranny), motor mounts ,a new manifold if carbureted, or figuring out the wiring ,with Fuel injection, along with a $100 fuel pump. The 5 speed would be nice, however, you might not be able to adapt the Dana 20 to it, or finding a Dana 300 and then the adapter ($500. )The 5 speed tranny and the TC that would come with it would need a slip yoke eliminator ($350.) And the driveshaft would still be really short.

My local JY quoted me $250 for a running 4.3 and $250 for a 4X4 5-speed tranny. I'm pretty sure the 5-speed won't fit a 5 (although I will research it), and worst case scenario I bolt one up to the T18. Which means an adaptor, which is, what... another $500?? MoC suggests installing a 4.0 from a JY Cherokee, but he also suggests pulling my 258 out of my 7 and installing it into Clay's Jeep. That would be the simplest thing to do. Then I could put the 4.3 in my 7 as planned. If I go that route then I'll do a complete rebuild on the 7 (which I WASN'T planning to do now). I have a lot to think about.

Choices, choices...

I degreased Clay's 5 earlier today with Purple Power. Sprayed it all over the place with my pump-up sprayer. Broke out the pressure washer only to find, after 18 years of faithful service, it has retired. So washed everything off with a nozzle and the garden hose. Not squeaky clean, but not dripping oil anymore. Started it up and ran it for 30 minutes. I have oil dripping from the front of the pan, and coming out of the dip stick tube. The pan leak is coming from between the pan and gasket. No idea WHY it's coming out of the tube! Pulled the PCV out the whole time it ran, venting into the atmosphere, so no pressure built up.

The front of the pan has a stripped bolt by the PO. Clay and I tapped it out to a larger size and tightened it down as far as we dare. That is where the leak appears to be.

After removing the PCV from the valve cover I have a TON of blowby. White smoke comes out of the hole in quantity. No smoke out the tailpipe that I can see, however.

WhatdoIdo?WhatdoIdo?WhatdoIdo?
Have Jim mill out an adapter I'm sure he could do it. Haha

Sorry Scott. I have nothing to offer but a sympathetic ear, some useless moral support, no automotive knowledge whatsoever.
