True story... I bought it because it has a 5500 pound towing capacity, and I pulled a 22' flats boat with it. The Astro is a 1500 with a van body. And the MPG is 22 vs 16 in the Ford. Hmmmmm...

Here's Clay working on the low spots on his grill. He had to Scotchbrite it first, degrease it, and then apply the Bondo. During the Bondo app our neighbor walked over and started telling Clay what to do! And then his wife started hollering to Clay to come right away... so Clay handed me the Bondo and went to help the neighbor's wife CATCH A CHICKEN! TRUTH!! So I finished the Bondo for Clay. It was kind of hard to apply it to the areas and it came out looking really sloppy. I did some preliminary sanding after it cured. Gonna have to see how this comes out. I hope it is not hard to blend. Needs a second coat. Incidentally, Clay caught the chicken!

Pretty ugly!! But it will sand off.


Some preliminary sanding. I used a DA to knock down the really thick stuff. Second coat will make it look so much better. It could prove difficult to blend the Bondo around the curved part of the fins.

Scott, WOW, a little concerned about the Bondo, looks like the DA took care of that..Regarding the Crabtree hangers, what's the color Crab Apple ??

I put another heavy skim coat on the grill a little while ago. It has cooled enough outside that it is not kicking off very fast. I would have waited and sliced off all of the sloppy overkill, but I'm cold and I ain't gonna wait around. So I expect to have a lot of sanding to do tomorrow. There's a 70% chance of rain tomorrow, and I figured it would not be conducive to applying Bondo. I think Dave keeps sending me his lousy weather on the days that I am off work!

What a natural TON of had sanding to do on this grill. It does not lend itself to typical sanding tools like blocks, discs, etc... too much curved area. Most of it was done with fingertips around the bottom of the curves at each fin, or strut, or whatever you call those things! Clay is applying a glaze coat after applying two Bondo skim coats. The air file worked on this piece to make sure everything was even acroos the front. Blending was the tough part.



While Clay was working on the grill I started working on the windshield... thinking "this is a job for Dad"! Ugh... I need help! Following are some windshield pics. I will make another post to keep them separate.

Windshield!!! AAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH.....

Alright... to NOT fix this windshield would be a direct blow in the face to all of you who HAVE fixed your windshield! So, I can do it, right? Following are pics of what I am up against. I think the rusted areas can be cut out and patched. I am willing to try it. My welder will handle this just fine, I'm not sure about the weldor!

Here is an overall pic of the WS. I think it is held together by spider webs!


The bottom outside frame has the traditional cancer.


The rust is into the internal frame.


Found this when I removed the seal.



Questions-
1) I have sprayed down the hex-head bolts with Blaster. They will "round out" if I try to remove them. How did YOU do it?
2) The PO bolted all the way through the frame to hold the hinge at one end! At least he used SS bolts! I have some extra holes to weld up.
3) How do I remove the glass? The WS rubber seal is still friable, so I will reuse. I don't want to tear it up. The glass is already busted.
4) Is there ANYTHING I need to know about when removing the wiper assy?

windshield

ya dont loose the little clip that holds the motor arm and the pax side arm together, i popped mine off with a screw driver, i heard it bounce a couple times down the tranny hole never to be seen again!!!!

Having attempted to repair my windshield frame that was in close to the same condition, I say your crazy to try and fix that. It was apparent it was going to be way to difficult to repair while keeping everything flat. Without the windshield in the frame, the entire thing trys to sag and warp as you work. Getting the windshield into a good frame was a lot of work, I couldn't imagine doing it to one that is even remotely warped. I know the aftermarket ones suck and a decent used one will be hard to find but I'd think long and hard about trying to save that one before diving in.

Scott I'd start looking for a windshield frame if I had that to deal with. I think I paid $275.00 for mine, used OEM, and it was well worth it. The aftermarket may be okay bit I've heard mixed things about them.

Clay has got the grill looking nice.

I will go with the experience and see if we can find another WS frame. If anybody has one that reads this post I need one to fit a 79 CJ5. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but a CJ7 WS is the same size?? In the meantime, for kicks and giggles, I will "play" with this thing and get some much needed experience with welding and repair. Thanks ALL for the input.

Nope... I ain't gonna do it! I'm just going to listen this time, and quit thinking I can make it new. I stripped the windshield, got all the parts off of it. I discovered the PO never tied the new wiper motor to the arms? Very effective! Got the hinges off and the rail for the top. Now I have to find another WS!! Posted a Wanted ad in the Classified.
