I got the frame back today. Everything lines up like it's supposed to. I am disappointed in one respect... he didn't cut the middle of the rear brace (brace between the rear frame arches) before he spread the rear horns. He just chained it and pulled it over. The rear springs/shackles line up and the axles are straight, the tires are parallel to the frame, but there is a kink in the left side of the frame just below the brace. I wish that wasn't there! He also got the diamond out, and now the motor mounts are aligned properly, so the motor/tranny won't sit crooked in the hole. I can't complain for $100!

The boys pushed it into the shop for me and went to watch an old Star Trek video!! I didn't have the heart to drag Clay back out to start grinding on the frame again, so I went out to do it myself. I grabbed my sander/polisher with a 6" sanding disc and hit a spot just to see how this was going to go... and the paint blew off like dust! Really... So I got the top and sides of the rails done in about 35 minutes. Tomorrow I'll pull the axles/springs, flip it, and get the bottom done. The good news is I have another chance to get the frame interior done. I'll use Dave's recipe for that.

I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

Man... I feel for ya... stuck in the twilight zone of frame painting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that this is the last time!

Could not have said it better! I will probably hit it with rust converter and then the implement paint. That has worked on the stock trailers I have painted and the axles for this rig. Gotta quit second guessing myself...

You'll get it this time Scott. Maybe it won't be as hot this time around and you won't have all of that sweat running down on your new paint.

I'll be painting my frame next week. Is there a liquid metal etcher I could but instead of sanding with 60grit and I could get all the hard to reach places. Let me know.

I chose to paint my frame a second time after failing to mix the hotrod flat properly. The first 2-3 coats from round number one are very thin, very glossy and with minimal pigment. It is likely the paint will peel once I get it on the road. I chose to take my chances of the paint peeling rather than stripping the paint down to the primer or worse, down to bare metal.

More expense, more time, a lot more work VS Rattle can touch up to a frame that will rarely be seen by anybody including me.

Consider powerwashing everything now, with a good pressure washer. All the paint and primer that does not lift will probably be fine; then scuff and spray.

You're gambling if you're asking ME that question! POR makes their Metal Ready which I've heard good things about. I like Ospho. I don't know that they work the same. Some of these guys that have successfully finished their frames will be a better resource. I'll add this, and Dave will second it... spend the money and have your frame sandblasted. It's the ONLY way you're going to get every nook and cranny. It just isn't worth the time to do it yourself with the amount of effort and cost. Then you can concentrate on painting it or, better, get it powder coated.

Dave- Your frame is my goal. Of all the builds on here that I have viewed, your frame looks best to me! I realize that they won't be seen once the rig is built, and we're not building "show frames", but yours is TIGHT, brother. I don't ever want to HAVE to pull the tub again.

They are both Phosphoric acid based for the etching but Metal ready also has Zinc Phosphate which leaves a coating that helps the POR to stick.

I wouldn't say sandblasting is the ONLY way. I used the paint stripper, wire wheel, pressure washer method and did pretty good. Sandblasting does work well with the pitting but if I were to do it again, I would have my frame acid dipped. Having witnessed a massive dip tank and the results of the parts they pulled out, I am sold on how well that works. It hits 100% of the surface inside and out. They have a same sized dip tank to neutralize the acid. From there it is up to you to get it painted or sealed ASAP.

Powder coating is durable and looks really good but it is also known to be prone to rock chip on frames and is a little more difficult to touch up.

Several years ago I was in Lincoln, Nebraska visiting a couple of companies that manufacture center pivot irrigations systems. They also manufactured street light poles. While touring at one of the companies they showed us how they acid dipped the metal that was used for the systems/light poles. Pretty neat stuff! After they were acid dipped and neutralized, they were dipped in hot galvanizing fluid. THAT would be killer! You're right in your comments... I just don't have those kinds of resources around here and I'm not used to thinking that way!

Trying to run down the complete fuel tank system. Clay has nothing. I looked at JF's FS section, CL and online. Buying a fuel tank online is going to be a PITA due to all the little pieces that come separately. We also need to track down a rear crossmember. Any advice here??

Scott I have some parts in my shop that I build for the pipeline industry and they are outside for years so they get hot dipped galvanized. The last time I had anything done there it was about 600 lbs. of parts and it cost me around $200.00. They have a &150.00 minimum. I'm not sure what a Jeep frame weighs but if I ever do another I would consider hot dipping it. I think you could even paint over the galvanizing if you wanted. Might even be able to spray on some kind of bedliner too.

Here's an idea on a rear crossmember. Mine was rusted too much to use so I made one incorporating the bumper into it.

Whipass rear cross member Besrk recommended.If I had the opportunity to change it,this is the one I would use. First info's free,the next costs BACON!!

My CJ5 frame is heavy, but I can pick it up if I balance it in the middle. I'm guessing under 150#s. Thanks for the input on the rear crossmember. I like that design and it is sensible!

Thanks, Lordwrench. If you lived closer I'd get you some bacon! I checked out the link and I like what I see.



Anybody have any input on the gas tanks/mounts, sending unit... perhaps some kind of all inclusive kit??

I finished sanding down the frame. It didn't take long to do, but then I didn't "clean it up" like I did initially. There are some areas where the paint remains. I shot it with Ospho and it is drying in the sun. Gonna rain soon so I hope it hurries! Things to remember about Ospho... it will eat your eyes and lungs! So have plenty of ventilation. Don't get it on concrete... it eats that too!

NOTE*- The frame was beginning to rust in places under the lacquer primer. As I removed the material with the sanding disc the rust would pop up here and there. I was surprised first, then disappointed. This is the second time this has happened! My advice... DON'T use lacquer primer. It looked so good going on that I was doing a jig before I finished! Strip your frame. Degrease it. Paint it with a material designed for bare or rusty metal. Three's a Charm... right??

Hey Scott I didn't see any gas tanks but Collins Brothers Jeeps and Jeep Parts had the rear crossmembers. About $80.00. Might be worth the dime and call them about the tank too. They said on their site that they have other parts that are not listed.

Thanks, Jim. I'm going to explore your method for a crossmember. Maybe save a little expense.

I'm going to try Photobucket again... see if I can give a description to each pic.

HEY!! I DID IT!!! Hope the captions come through...

Well, Crap! I'll figure it out some day.

The first pic is just how the frame was looking while sanding. I couldn't believe how easily the paint came off with a 60 grit sanding disc. No sweat... but it was because the paint wasn't stuck. If your paint is stuck, it won't be that easy!

The 2nd pic is just after wiping it down with Denatured Alcohol.

The 3rd and 4th pics are moments after applying Ospho. Remember... have good ventilation or a repsirator. Or you will end up on oxygen some day!

The last pic shows how the Ospho cleaned up the metal. Tomorrow I will wipe it down again and paint it. The areas where the paint remains is "stuck paint". I could not scrape it off easily, so it stays!
