With that kind of weather, shouldn't you be sanding or painting a CJ right now?

Seeing those pictures and your new avatar took me back to a Sunday afternoon float I had down the Kishwaukee river last summer. I hope you don't mind me reminiscing about warm weather considering its the end of January in Northern IL.

When you pass this little grass patch, affectionately known as "Muff Island", you are typically 45 minutes into a 3.5 hour float.


This picture doesn't show much but I had a bald eagle scare the crap out of me when I scared it out of a tree. I didn't have the camera ready but I did catch this picture of him 20 minutes later. The one on the left is a hawk. The eagle in the middle easily had a 6' wing span and a body over 30".


Here is when I caught two does crossing the river. There is one in the middle and one just out of the view on the right.


This is at the end of a different float but is the picture that I was reminded of when I saw yours. Take the bend to the left and get out. The nice thing is that this one is only .25 mile from my house.

Beautiful, Mike. Love the pics. You post anything, anytime, Brother! Your deer look like Moose compared to ours! The last canoe trip we took down the Suwannee (across the road from the house) there was a lightning-blasted pine tree. All the limbs were dead. The river is very low and there was an exposed bar. On the bar was a dead Snapping Turtle (maybe 30#). In the tree were a LOT of Buzzards. The top limb was weighted down and sagging with the sheer number. ONE MORE Buzzard landed on the branch and it broke, dropping all the Buzzards towards the ground. All of them "caught" themselves except one... it hit the ground, dignity shattered, and flew away. Funny as anything I ever saw!

SKerr, I just spent about 4 1/2 hours going through the whole thread, you guys are doing a great job, and you are giving your kids one heck of a great learning experience at the same time.

You are definitely braver than I tearing into that old fiberglass tub, id have just gone and got a steel one, but i think in the end it will turn out pretty well.

A couple of thoughts I have for you, you could put the larger cutout fender flares on the jeep and it would allow you to open up the back wheel well a bit more.



Pictured above is a 82 CJ5 that I bought last summer, was going to fix a few things on it and drive it, instead I wound up pulling a bunch of parts off it, and selling it, as it turns out at 6'1" and 270lbs having spent the last several years working as a steel worker, I just don't fit in a CJ5. So I went and got a 800.00 CJ7 and started working on it.

Anyways to the point I was making the fender flares looked pretty good on it, and they will allow you to cut out the inside of the fender more so if Clay gets into a flexy situation with the jeep it will not tear up the tub by smacking the tire into the wheel well.

I will be watching for updates on your progress. It is going to be a slick rig I think when done.

Oh also looking at Clay's beads, if he turns up the amperage about 3-10 more amps he will get a better looking weld because it will be a wetter weld. It takes some getting used to, but it will cause the weld to flaten out a bit more giving it a better appearance, and he will get better penetration. Over all though his welds are looking good.

Thanks, Beast, for checking it out. Sorry about all the "filler"! What kind of flares did you use? I like how it looks. Hopefully, we will be ebnding tubing tomorrow and Monday. Stay tuned...

Well Scott, not to add insult to injury, but first time bending tube today... Buddy has a JD2, known him a while, just found out he had the bender. Anyway, took about 30 minutes of sheer determination, but not bad... I guess my point is, good luck with the bender you have, but if you can hold out and find a tubing bender, you might be less frustrated.


... I guess I'm gonna have to fix that too…….

If you don't mind, post up a couple of good shots of your paint. Looks like camo with a clear coat?? Looks like a nice camo job with clear coat! In fact, let's see the Jeep!!

Not sure what we'll do with the flares. I have a set of stock flares, donated by Bill (lucdog), to put on. I have studied the "cut wheel well look", and I like it very much. Not sure how good that will look with 33s. Clay won't likely be flexing this Jeep. It will mostly be his DD. Any "hard" use will likely be the woods, hunting, potential mudding, etc. There's still a big question mark in this build.

I would love to send you more pictures of it, however I sold that jeep and do not have any more.

You can see it in this video though, not sure how well.
