I had the same thing happen to me on some stuff I made earlier this year. Painted it outside right before a rain but did manage to get it in out of the weather but it took several days for that paint to cure.

With the axle not sitting right now but it did before made me wonder if you could have installed one of the springs the wrong way. I'm not sure if the bolt through the spring is centered or not but if it's not maybe that's the problem. Just a though. Hope it's something that simple.

Yep, Happy Anniversary!

I measured my springs this morning but could not get online today. The hanger bolt to the the center of the axle tube is almost exactly 22", so that should rule out having a spring backwards.

Another possibility would be if the spring locating bolt is not in the hole in the spring plate. The head is not very tall so it would be easy to tighten the u-bolts and not see that it's fully seated especially now that everything is painted black.

Glad to hear about the paint curing slowly. It makes me feel better. Our paint is actually much better today.

Thanks Guys, for the anniversary wishes. I have certainly gotten more than I have given. God is good.

Thanks for the ideas about the springs, but they are in correctly. I WISH they weren't! Dave- thanks for taking time to measure your springs. I am aiming at a different concept. Keep in mind that this is a CJ5 (would it be the same as a 7, cause I have one of those too)... what is the width of the frame, from inside to inside, just above the spring mounts, AND just above the shackle mounts? Is it normal for the rear frame horns to be narrower than the frame at the spring mounts? This makes the shackles closer together than the spring mounts, making the springs narrower at the rear. This is what I have going on and my springs aren't parallel to the frame. I'm wondering if the PO damaged the frame previously. There are some suspicious welds around the crossmember.

A photo would help, you know how this board is without something to look at

The rear frame rails are straight in this photo.

Okay... got some better perspective but some lousy pics! I tried to make them good, but glare was bad, so I changed the setting and I couldn't hold the dang thing still... but you'll be able to see well enough. Hold the cursor over the pic for a description.

First pic is the measurement at the spring mounts... 32.5"
Second pic is a close up of the measurement.
Third pic is the rear frame horns at 32".

In this series of pics I was trying to give a visual of how everything is sitting. Siting down the frame on the left and right sides, from the rear, and then an overview from front to back. In the last two pics it looks like the frame horn on the left side of the picture is lower than the one on the right. But it is the right side ( in the picture) that appears to me to be narrower and slightly twisted. The plot thickens...

The shock mount on the right side of the pic is slightly different than the one on the left side. I first noticed it when installing the spring plates. I couldn't see anything evident in the mount itself, but now I think it is the whole frame.

I understand that a DJ5 and a CJ5 share the same frame. I'm going to pick this up in just a few minutes. Got it before going to the crusher... $150. I just want the frame. Maybe it will have some gears better than 2.72.

After Googling the similarities of the two frames it looks like there are too many differences. I called the guy back and told him nevermind. I need to get out of this funk!

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I measured the same area you show in post 156 and have 32.5 in both areas.

If there's a collision shop your town, may be worth it to have them look at it and give a price to straighten it. Doesn't look like much damage and may only take a few pulls to tweak it in line.

Now would definetly be the time to put it on a rack. I wouldn't think it would cost much espcially if they have to pull. Nothing in the way!

Now that you mention it, there just might be a shop in town. I'll give them a call. Shoulda thought of that...

He is just a purist I suppose. Since I have made my living with heavy equipment/farming I have a lot of respect for tractor paint! And my frame has dried to a very nice hardness.

The Jeep is sitting for just a bit. The idea of a frame shop intrigued me so I went on the hunt. I have no idea what it would cost to have it straightened, but maybe it will be justifiable. My thinking is that Clay will be driving this... I want it safe. I want it to track straight, etc. So I called a shop that is advertised frequently on the radio. YEP! They straighten frames. My wife called them up while I was at work, and she gave me the report when I got home from work. They spoke to her with the "Dumb Broad" attitude, which is a serious error when regarding my wife! And I'm thinking "Just finish the report, just finish the report!". It didn't bode well for that shop... but I stopped there on the way home today anyway. The owner seemed like maybe he had painted too many cars in a nonventilated room! Kind of a vacuous look with the personality of a bag of hammers! He said that his frame man would be in NY for the next couple of weeks. And while I am talking to him, a customer who had just paid and left, came back and said, "The seat still leans to one side". So the owner excuses himself, walks out to the man's Chevy crewcab, climbs in behind the driver's seat, puts both his knees into the back rightside of the seat, braces himself against the backseat, and pushes like heck against the driver's seat. I can physically see the seat "bend" forward and to the right! He gets out and says, "Try that"! !!!! So I think I'll hunt for another frame shop!

That is crazy man! I stopped by a collision center last year to talk to them about my frame. The old guy there was a straight shooter. After looking at mine he said I would be better off finding a good used frame. Just to put it on the rack was a minimum of $400.00 and up to 800.00 depending on what they had to do. But keep in mind I live in an overpriced, highly inflated city! I have seen others get everything done for 200.00 elsewhere.

Scott have you determined if both frame rails are bent or just one? You also mentioned the po had welded a new crossmember in too. It sounds like that needs to be cut lose and some straightening done then re weld it. Regardless of where the frame is bent it's not much. I think if it were mine I'd do it myself. If one rail is the problem you would need to find a way to stabilize it and move the other to the correct place. I think it could be done and it would save you some money. I have a feeling most everybody that has a frame machine is going to charge you a good bit.

And you haven't inhaled too many paint fumes.
