Going from2.72 to 3.31, is a good improvement.I went from 3.54 to 4.10 in my Q-Trac trail Jeep. There're basically the same, .60 difference.

Shipping would be a killer. I had a Dana 44 shipped from Detroit to central Il. 3 years ago. $150. Only paid $100 for the axle.

It's been a good day today, and it's not over yet! Clay and I got some important mods started. The crossmember is tacked up. This helps us figure out the mounting requirements for the back of the tub. It also gets the gas tank/skidplate off my shop floor! Wifey made a parts run for us, so we have some rattle can primer/sealer, mat, hardener, and other go-fasters.

Clay has decided that he will make the back of the Jeep solid. No tailgate, no cargo net. The PO had cutout the back and made his own tailgate out of the glass piece that he removed. Clay removed the steel angle the PO used to frame out the tailgate, and we couldn't believe the dirt and crud that came out of it!! Also, check out the rotted, bug-infested wood!

We had to stop a bit to cool off. Wifey made a big pitcher of Gatorade, so we've been in pretty good shape. Fixing to go back to work. Itis getting ready to pour!

This first pic shows the crossmember in place. We just stuck it up there as square as possible. We have to remove some steel.


Here is the reveal on the crossmember before Clay did some grinding to the frame horns. The frame horns had been repaired/replaced by a welding shop.


Clay grinding down some steel on the frame horns. This will get the crossmember under the tub and flush.


Tacked in place, plumbed... looks good.


Here's Clay showing the crud that fell out between the two pieces (inside and outside skins) of tailgate. The PO cut this rectangle out, framed it with steel, and put hinges on it. We're going to reuse it to close up the hole that he cut.


This is what would happen to untreated wood that gets wet between yuor glass layers. Be careful!


Clay buzzing off the interior skin so we can remove the old wood.

It's look good. I admire the continued progress. Does Clay seem excited about the prospect of getting the project finished?

Good to see that crossmember on the frame. Looks like it fitting great too. I also like the idea of fixing the tailgate hole. Clay will make that look good too. Speaking of Clay...Scott would you send him up here for a while, I need some help in the shop!!!!


Oh and I am wondering what your alls plans are for a roll bar? Frame tie ins?

Yes and no, Ken. He is excited about finishing the project. He THINKS he's going to be done in 3 or 4 months! That would be nice. Maybe if he busts his butt but I can say that the more metal work there is to do, the better he enjoys the work! He confessed to me today that he definitely does NOT like the detail work involved in body work. He really took control when welding up his crossmember, and he wants to start building bumpers, rollcage, etc. BUt we have the tub to finish, and this is not his favorite part.

I tried to send him to you a couple of times, but you keep telling me he eats too much!!

We will expand upon the roll bar that he has now... like the guy with the thread (SummertimeCJ7 ???). Something along those lines. Clay wants to make his own pieces. I don't have any plans to tie it into the frame. Maybe later...

Scott, the mounting straps are, 1 7/8" wide, sides are about 3/8", and roughly 3/16's" thick.

Bill... would you mind terribly taking another picture that puts your crossmember in perspective? I can see the strap, but the bed looks so high off the frame, and the strap seems to have such a slight bend in it. I am not getting the perspective... sorry.

Well ok, since you asked so nice. Its 10.5" C
TO C on the bolts, and 12.250" long. The tubing at the rear is the cage tie in. From the rear crossmember of the body, to the top of the frame is 3.625".

No body lift either. My 79 CJ 7 is the same.

I had these great big plans for the Jeep today!!! Clay and I were going to glass some wooden pads at each tub mount to raise the body off of the upper shock mounts. We were going to do some other glass work to reinforce the tub in different areas. It was going to be a glass day. You know how it goes though. Wifey had an idea for a great day, and it was. No complaints. But no Jeep work either! My youngest turned 10 today, and he had the idea he wanted to go canoeing on the Suwannee River. It is across the street from us and available... a resource we don't use enough. So here's some pics of the fun we had today. It was about a 4 mile trip with swimming and excitment. I... am... wore... slap... out! We saw 1 buck and 2 does, 2 Red-Shouldered hawks, a Turkey Buzzard, a Snowy Egret, what I call a Cowbird, a couple of turtles, a Black Racer, and this little Brown Water Snake. And wifey ran out of storage space on the card!

Enjoy...

First we had a little drill in case we tipped our canoes. How to act, how to right the canoe, etc. Turned into a whole bunch of fun.


This is where we're going.

And number 3 son pounced on it... Brown Water Snake


Lots of beauty on the way. It's neat how the roots grow right through the Limestone rock.


Peaceful river and not another soul on it today. Sometimes there are lots of tourists.


More interesting sights. The trees have to fight to keep from falling in the river. Just the same, there are LOTS of trees in the river!.

I agree!!! That makes me want to go back on vacation, and I just got back!!!
