CJ8 Transmission

I am new to the older Jeep world. I just recently purchased a 1981 CJ8. How do I know what model manual transmission I have? I can only find Borg-Warner on the side of it and it is a four speed.

Also, does anyone know if there is supposed to be a catalytic converter on this model year?

I just took possession of it, from out of state, and I'm anxious to get working on it. But first I need to get it registered in CA.

Thanks.

Transmission should be a T4 (borg warner). Converter, I have no idea. I haven't seen an original exhaust. Good luck with her.

My 1979 had a catalytic converter on it when I got it so I would have to think an 81 would too.

I just played the cat-game myself. The PO of mine cut 'em off, so I had to get some new ones put on. Yay for spending money to fix someone else's illegal mods! But yes, your '81 should have a cat.

Will help a lot. Is the two hundred miles of vacuum lines, valves, solenoids, etc still in tack or is that gone too?
