I would suspect the body was on crooked so the opening in the floor is hitting on the shifter or the boot was hitting or the tranny mount is in the wrong hole.

Which gears do you have, from your description I would figure 3rd 4th and 5th and rev.

If not, I have no idea.

3/4/5

My thoughts were 1st 2nd 3rd. up forward/back 2nd/up 3rd. Then back reverse. It does go, but, slow 1st on take off so maybe 3rd??? Would I be able to take off in 3rd from standstill without stalling. 488 gears on 35's

Probably if you had the transfer case in low range.

Rob, take a min to pop your shifter boots off and see if you're getting the full range without any interference.

shifter boots

I did have to cut the diamond plating back (toward the rear) to accomodate the shifter, but, Will make sure of the range. I do get reverse though (so i thought i was good, but will check. I did take off the shifter arm when installing the YJ body. Could it easily be misapplied when reinstalling? I didn't think about it much since it seemed to fit back in, but, perhaps there are 2 different holes for the shifter to fit into?????

Check the last 3 pics in this post. When I reinstalled my tub on a 1" BL, I ended up moving the plate to the rear and left to get the clearance I needed.

Jeep t5 problems

i will have to pull the diamond plate and see, but it seemed like I cut the diamond plate back far enough and that there was room on the body opening to accomodate. (probably wrong here as this is a great explanation).

On the same note, does 1st and 5th have a farther travel pattern than 2nd thru 4th and reverse?

No, all the gears "should" have the same amount of travel.

noticed you said T-5 - the 5th gear is held onto the spline with a retainer clip - if that falls off, the gear slips back on the saft and no more 5th - easy fix if that is the case

would only affect 5th thou - you are mising 2 gear levels

I would suspect a clearance issue as the others have, not getting full range

Did you check the body/shifter clearance?

Yup, sounds like 3,4,5. I can start off in 3rd without stalling easily and run 33's with 3.31 gears.

You need to pull the boot off and see what is binding up.

I would check the clearance for the shifter travel as others have said. One other item I didn't see above is the shifter bushing. If I recall correctly, there is a bushing over the shifter ball at the end of the shift lever on the T4 and T5's . Perhaps this fell off while the shifter was removed?
