CJ7 tach wiring

Does anyone know if an original 84 CJ7 factory tachometer has any means of switching it from 6 cylinder compatible to 8 cylinder compatible.

No, they never came with V8's. But on a recent post, a gent insists it just works with his new V8. I would be tempted to just try it and see. It is wired inline with the ignition power.

Mine is wired like the stock one was but the tach is not stable. It reads correctly for a while then it will jump up 500 or 600 rpm and bounce around that for a while. It's unstable and gives inconsistent readings. I guess I need to buy a new tach.
