CJ7 Mechanical Fuel Pump Help!!!

I am trying to replace the mechanical fuel pump on my 84 cj7 I-6 and it does not seem to want to go back in. I have tried researching this question, but cant find much. I have tried bumping the engine over to see if that helps at all, but nothing. Anybody ever had this problem?

Yup, I've had that problem.

Instead of bumping the motor with the key, put a socket on the crank pulley and turn it a bit.

I just replaced mine last week, and used a socket to turn the engine a little bit at a time until it made it east to install.

It dosn't fall into place. Rather you will not have as much pressure on the arm to install it into place.

Yeah so now gotta install new fuel tank and wait for my carb to get back from dad's mechanic and she will be ready to fire up and hopefully stay running!

For clarification, the spring-loaded pump arm rides on an oval shaped cam. By turning the crank, so the arm is on a low spot in the cam, you reduce the amount of spring tension on the arm, making it easier to install.

Glad you got it installed, and good luck with your future work.
