cj7 engine swap

I picked up a used engine for my 83 cj7 yesterday i ran the part number and it appears to be an engine out of an 88 jeep. It is a 4.2 6cylinder. There are some differences between my old engine and the one I picked up as far as motor mounts. Does anyone know if this engine will fit in my cj? This is stamped on the used motor MoparJR524270AA

Yes it will fit. Yj's use different mounts, but your CJ ones will bolt on. You will need to swap or get a new pilot bushing for the crank as the YJ one uses a larger bearing. Other than that, you are good to go.

Okay it looks like the motor mounts fit. Thanks Mike. Do you know what bushing I will need.

If they have the same drive belts also - Serp. VS. V-belt the water pump rotation is reversed.

yeah the 88 engine has a serp the 83 I think had multiple belts. The engine came with everything attached. water pump, alternator, clutch, and also a ac compressor which mine did not have ac. I wonder how difficult it would be to set the 83 up with ac

A lot of work and parts. But, think of it this way, I believe that AC pump can be converted to an onboard air pump.

You can always use the AC for an onboard air pump. I just put a 1994 in mine and it bolted in. You might find the DS engine mount has one larger metric bolt.

I used the bushing out of my 258 because I knew it wasn't that old. It was slightly too large so I used a grinder carefully to make it right. You need the bushing to match the tranny.
Edit, a 258 one should just fit, I put a 4.0 in mine.

If you didn't force it out of the old engine with a puller or you can pack the hole full of grease and use a dowl or bolt the exact size of of the bushing to pound into the grease which will pop the bushing out, it is still in the old crank.

I would do a Google search. I know some types of pumps work and some don't, but you have the bracket there anyway so getting one from the wrecker cheap or as a swap isn't out of the question.

I believe they all work it is just a question of how long. The crank pumps like the York have am oil crankcase and the swash plate style that he likely has relies on oil in the Freon for lubrication. I think you could add an oiler to the intake and get decent life out of the swash plate style but I have no experience with it.

Here is a good article on it. I will probably put the Cherokee compressor I have on. Sounds like they run for quite awhile without much oil. Since I only need it for airing tires it will not have to run much.
