CJ7 to CJ8(ish) stretch- the dimention extention.

I did a search, but didn't see anything that matched.

Has anyone here ever stretched the back of a 7 to mimick that of an 8?

I have to rip the whole rear endoff my donor tub. The corners are shot, the very rear of the bed is pinholed, the rear most crossmember is kaput- therefore the rear body mounts are shazbot. The ever so rusty tub I am replacing actually has good rear corners, crossmember, etc.

Since I have major surgery to do any way, what would be the likelyhood I could stretch the whole thing to Scrambler like dimention??

With some chassis extention, sheet metal, a longer gas line, and a little creativity, does anybody think this is a bad idea?

If I use 8 dimentions I can probably use 8 parts. If this has been done before let me know. I just have the stuff to do it with, and would like the extra room.

Don't flame me- I understand the "special-ness" of a CJ8. I think they are the coolest JEEP ever (especially the Alaskan Postals- SCHWING). I will not do anything poser-ish and put 8 badges on it- I promise!

Lemme know what ya'll think.

Strech

I am going to do the same thing! . Here in Maine they rust away. Try to find a doner cj-8 thats ready for scrap.I would do it all -frame strech in the center and in the tail. Then you can use cj 8 parts. When i was done i would use the vin tag and front hull for mine. A cj 8 repaired (in a big way )is better than scrap! My friend just scraped a scrambler ! Make or buy 1/4 panels. They sell new frames. I might take heat for this too but I like to save jeeps.(seems like most jps on here are modified ) Hell put a 304 in it just for fun!! I am also going to cut the bed off a yj and make it a long flat bed. The rear is destroyed. If you need help let me know -I chop jeeps up every day

Ok Kiddies!

Clemson SMOKED auburn yesterday and looked pretty good. Without Scam Newton they couldn't muster much offense. I gotta admit- He looks GOOD with Carolina. Too bad the rest of the team SUCKS OUT LOUD.

I am gonna try it. I dont think my cheater way will be too difficult. This is my first build, and I haven't welded anything since high school, but I'm good with my hands.

I am gonna take some pictures and start a build thread this week. You willall be witness to a great moment for me, or a horrendous disappointment with possible physical injury, hospitalization, or dismemberment. I hope not. At worst I hope it is only filled with busted knuckles and lots of cussing.

The flickr account I opened for this does not seem to be terribly easy for downloading. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See you soon.

Hey DutchJPR-

Born and raised in America, but 100% Dutch on both sides from forever. Grandparents first generation American, both sides all spoke it, it never made it down to me. I am fairly good with German though, not as good as I should be after 6 years of it.

Thanks for the encouragement- pics to follow.

I don't have much to say about stretching a 7 to a 8. Sounds interesting though.

However, I will say... GO TIGERS!! They Whooped AUBURN!!

Looking forward to your build. Photobucket works well for pics... you might try that. Many years ago, while hiking in the Cashiers woods, I came across a "cooking" still!! Made my hair stand up on the back of my neck!!! Didn't see anybody, but I could feel eyes on me! Pretty country up there...

i have thought about doing this so many times to my crawler so i can bring my dogs. super easy to do just graft on back half of another tub and extend the frame with some 2x4 box tubing or something close to it. i will post up a link to another site where the guy did something similar.

I knew I liked you guys! Palmetto- my wife is class of '99, I should have been '02 but I took a 9 year siesta. I am back now as a 35 yr old sixth semester senior! Life is good!

Scott- This is amazing country! And yes, get into the wrong place....and it can be scary. I fly fish a lot, and always have my .45- never leave home without it. I have heard tell of dudes hiking or fishing and coming up on some meth heads cookin up some poison. I am careful!

Will try the photobucket, thanks.

OK- Now ya'll can see what I mean about the differences of this tub. This is the mystery tub. Sorry about the photo quality here, but this is currently the only pic I have. This is the day I brought her home.....what a great moment. This is from my phone at the PO's house. I was super giddy. New build thread imminent.

Start with a new CJ-8 frame and cut right behind the door openings. Buy new rear side skins and happy welding.. Give me a call when you need anything measured I have an 81 scrambler.. Good luck. A new frame is the only to go...
