CJ7 258 exhaust question

Removing my old exhaust system, I had a smaller tube coming off the downtube. The smaller tube bends toward the passenger side and up to what appears to be some sort of valve. The valve partitions part of the exhaust gas back to the air intake. The tube I took off had about 10 holes in it, so I know it was not working properly.

I am guessing its purpose was to recirculate unburned exhaust back through the carb in hopes that it would burn on its second trip through the engine. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Anyway, do I need it? What is its correct name if I were to get a replacement? Or should I just weld the tap on the new downtube shut (no emissions testing here).

It's called the Pulse Air System and that thing is a Pulse Tube and yes you're correct, it circulates o2 into the exhaust stream to lean out your NO2 emissions.

If you live in a county that requires Emissions, you'll need it to pass. If not, cut it off and weld the bung shut where it enters your Cat.

Thank you! Woo Hoo, I get to practice more welding! I like it. Not a great welder, but I've successfully welded in steel body patches, so I should be able to handle that nipple.

(Hee hee. I said "handle that nipple" on the Jeep forum!)

Thanks jadams
