CJ5 For Sale Soon, What to ask?

My dad purchased his CJ5 new in 1969. It's finally time to let it go and would like some feedback on the value of CJ's. Here's some info on it:

1969-1/2 Jeep CJ-5

Front Axle/Differential/Gearing: Model 27; open; 3:73's
Rear Axle/Differential/Gearing: full floater Model 44; Detroit locker; 3:73's
Engine/Trans/Xfer Case: Buick V-6 (225); Muncie M420 4-speed; DANA 18
Major Mods/Changes:
Saganau steering
2-1/2" Lift
WARN XD9000i Winch
York air compressor
11" Drum Brakes
Full roll cage
32" Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires on 15x8 chrome modular wheels
Rack on rear for spare tire and two 5 gallon cans.

I don't know off hand how long it's been since the last engine rebuild. He just rebuilt the TC.

Paint is faded. Body is in good shape but does have some shape but does have some dings and dents.

Here's a pic.

a well prepared, trail-proven original owner CJ5 like yours, (around here, at least) would be listed for $5-$6.5K, if that helps you at all.

I agree with the 5k to 6k+. Being "built" is in the eye of the builder and trusting someone elses work. A stock CJ of the same year in rust free solid mechanical condition could fetch more.

Midwest would get $4k without winch, $5k with. Ask $6k and let the buyer work you down. Is that an SM420 trans, or M-20 trans. There's a pretty big difference, SM420 being the more desirable. Original unmolested would bring a higher ask, but also a smaller market. Nice JEEP.

Where do you come up with this? I bought a brand new 8K winch from Summit for my enclosed trailer a year ago for $500.

If you bought a 9000i for $500, you need to be sharing the secret. That MileMarker won't have quite the same resale.

You're right, though, thought the winch sold closer to $1500 with the fairlead and accessories. Eh, bump up to $4500 without for the Midwest. That's a realistic cash-in-hand price, too, not some dreamy "Well, it should be worth..." Maybe $5500 CA since everything is more expensive there, anyway, but I don't know your part of the country other than what I see on fleaBay, which isn't a very accurate guage.

ah, the infamous winch/price/worth discussion....

according to the news, you can buy a hooker for $20/hr, up to $7,000/hr.

technically, they both do the same thing, too!

The CJ is in southern California. The tranny is the SM420 (Munci granny-gear four speed). The Warn winch will probably come off and be replaced with a MileMarker 8k winch that's presently on the YJ he just bought (the fourth Jeep occupying the driveway right now).

Unfortunately it has had a few too many trips to Pismo Beach. Even though he washed it down thoroughly afterwards salt water gets in places a garden house won't. It probably has more rust than a typical Cali Jeep (or at least one that hasn't been to Pismo a lot). Compared to pictures I see of Jeeps on the right coast it has nothing. The rust is pretty much limited to the typical places on the body. I think the body is a good shape for a rig that is almost 40 years old but it's not a show Jeep, it's a trail rig.

He does need to sell it and it's looking like it's going to be listed as $4k or best offer.
