CJ5 questions

Ok, I've had this 79 renegade for about a half a month now and have worked up some questions. If you can answer any of them, I'd appreciate it.

1. Bolts, where do I get bolts from, like the bellhousing bolts, the clutch bolt, etc.

2. I'm getting a new clutch because im dropping in an amc 360, is there a certain size needed?

3. I just got a different filter to go on the top, the hose coming from the old one went to the oil cap, since that hose isnt need anymore, does that hole in the oil cap need to be plugged off?

Not sure about the bolts or clutch, but the hose coming from the oil cap is your breather hose. Your Autoparts store should have a filler cap that has a breather built into it. They are cheap, but you don't want to just block off that breather...

You need to get the right grade of bolts, thread size and length of bolts that came off of the original. Most bolts have markings on the head to let you know their grade, like three dashes or something of the sort. Depending on state laws, you might be able to find the right grade, thread and size at a hardware store. In NM hardware stores don't want the liability of selling grade 8 automotive use bolts, couldn't even get them at the bolt store. Bolts are designed to handle specific torques, and uses. Some of them have smooth shafts before the threads start, some need washers, ect. I always take one that I need with me to the store, makes it easier.

My T15 bolted to the bell housing with 7/16 course grade 8 bolts -- not sure of the length. I'm sure you have a different bell and transmission. Easiest thing to do would be to take the bell housing to your local Fastenel store (you have two in Chattanooga) and size things up. As for length, figure out the thickness of the transmission flange and the depth of the threads in the bell and subtract about a quarter inch after washer and lock washer (you don't want to bottom-out and strip the threads in the bell). As for the bolts from the bell to the block.....find a bolt you have that is close and take it with you and go up or down in size and purchase a few bolt sizes close to what you think you need, go home and narrow it down......it's a pain but easier than taking the block with you! I'd bet something else attached to the block has the same threads and could be used for a reference as well.
Good luck!
