In all the years that I've been a jeep owner, I've never done this. Great info!
Mine is 211C28 which decodes as a 2 bbl 258 built on November 28th, 1978. That makes a lot of sense now since it has a remanufactured tag on it.
The motor came in my 1976 CJ-5 that I had and had the T-150/Dana 20 combo behind it. I swapped in a T-18a later. If I decoded the CJ-5 VIN, it showed a 232.
Now on my 1976 CJ-7, which I purchased in pieces, the VIN decodes as having the 304 V8 with auto and quadra-trac, which wasn't there when I purchased it. The frame and body had seen its better days on the CJ-5 so the entire drivetrain, axles and suspension were moved to the CJ-7. Oh yea, I also swapped in wide-track axles from an 82 scrambler as well on YJ springs.
