Cj5 Camper
*** PICS MOVED TO PAGE 5 ***
I just picked up this 1973 CJ5 with a Camper that was a rare factory option back in 1969. Anyone have any info on this contraption ? Any help or comments would be great. Thanks [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]

That is the wildest freaking thing I've ever seen on a Jeep. Good luck finding info on it, I never would have figured they would have tried anything like that.

This thing is pretty crazy to drive.
The guy I bought it from has driven this thing all over the US. A little info with pics I found. Any idea how many of these were sold ? [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG] |

Restore it. Maybe upgrade the steering/brakes for the CJ. Refurbish the camper, and enjoy it!!!!!

Boy I wish I had one of those when I went camping and hunting. Then you could just slide it off and take the Jeep out. It looks to be in VERY good condition for its age, too.

I've read about them but never seen or heard of anyone having one. Congrats on a nice find.

Wow. I have no idea how many were made, but I bet 90% ended up rolled over in a ditch or at the bottom of a canyon. Looks like a scary ride

That is really something else, that is. I would put a tailgate in my Jeep for one of those puppies.

Here's some things I found...
An article on what to do with it (restore it and make a mint, if you decide to sell it)... http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/5469_modify_restore_old_jeeps/index.html From the book "Jeep" by Jim Allen (which can be viewed on Google books for free): "In 1969, a Camper option was made available for the CJ-5. This was a slide-in unit that had its own set of wheels and suspension to help carry the load. It was recommended for Jeeps with the V-6 and 4.88 axle ratios. The Camper slept four, had a built-in propane stove, water tank, sink, and an icebox. Options included a gas/electric refrigerator, a 10,000 BTU heater, and a second roof vent. These Campers were produced only in 1969 and early 1970. Upon the AMC buyout in February of 1970, this special option was not carried over. Campers are very rare and only a handful remains."

I was told that grandpa set out one day back in the mid 70's to buy a camper.
As he was looking at campers, the CJ Camper pulled into the lot. He said that he just had to have it, so he made an offer and ended up buying it. I was told that he drove the thing everywhere and was an avid outdoors man. He would take it hunting, fishing and camping. The CJ Camper was parked in mid 1996 and has sat since mid 2007. It was driven 15 miles and parked again until I bought it last week. Since then, I have separated the Jeep from the camper. My father is doing some minor repairs to the camper while I am ordering parts for the CJ5 and getting ready to do a full tune-up and go through the brake system. I also need to buy 7 tires for the thing. The camper is pretty clean. It's even cleaner in person. The interior of the CJ5 is outstanding. I have been looking for paint chips, as I think I'm going to repaint it the original green. I got pretty lucky, NO RUST AT ALL ! "just minor surface" I'm not sure if I'm going to pull the tub or not. I done it on my CJ7 and it's a time consuming task. |
