I am about to embark on my long awaited journey of rebuilding my 1981 CJ5. A friend is allowing me to use his garage which has a lift and practically everything I need to get going (minus a few specialty tools I'm not aware of yet). The state of the Jeep is definitely on the higher end of "great shape" but It needs some love as I am approaching the 100,000 mile mark and I have limited knowledge of what the previous owner did in terms of regular maintenance. I have my FSM and a positive attitude. The jeep runs quite well, with only 3 minor things that need to be fixed at the moment:
Throwout bearing (Clutch)
Intake Manifold Gasket (replacement)
After initial inspection with the Jeep lifted we noticed fluid leaks in many locations (as expected):
Front Dana 30 and Rear 44
Light surface rust on frame and body. (Jeep has been in Las Vegas for its entire life up until las year (Southern California)
[I will post pictures as soon as I hit the 25 post mark required by the forum]
I guess Im looking for a great place to start in terms of a limited budget build on a great condition 81 CJ5. Any "while you're doing this...(the three things I'm fixing above)...you might as well and do this" type ideas.
I am limited in knowledge and hope to learn as much as possible from all of you and this experience in general. I appreciate the help and I'll be updating regularly and posting photos as soon as possible. Thank you.
