CJ And YJ frames

I have had a hard time finding a replacement CJ frame for my build and mine would take quite a bit of work to get fixed.... My question is.... What are the major differences between CJ and YJ frames besides the body mounts.
They aren't a concern since I have a YJ tub to replace my rotted out CJ tub. Would I be better off building a YJ and using the CJ dash and fenders?

yes, unless you buy a new aftermarket CJ frame.

Cost wise I would say yes. Easier to find a YJ frame than a good CJ frame. And if your looking for toy or driver and not a restoration project really wouldn't matter. Not a lot of difference between the two but enough to create some work wider front spring, dash / defrost different, grill mounts a little different. NOTHING that can't / hasn't been done. Good luck have fun.

But if your starting with a CJ,the axles won't bolt up, and you'll need YJ springs as the mounts are welded in on the front and the eye to eye distance is a little longer. Transmisdion mount will be off too. In the end, you'll have a YJ with a CJ dash and front clip. The CJ grill will need a large notch cut out of the lower left corner to clear the now higher steering box. The grill mount will be off too.

Use a CJ frame ..

The YJ frame rails are 4" further apart than a CJ, front and rear.

Try TDK for a frame. I picked one up 2 years ago. Its still sitting in the garage...finally primed. Eventually I will get it done. Do not buy it from TDK though. Try 4WD first. The shipping from 4WD Hardware was $300 less than from TDK. You call and order from 4wD and TDK will call you to take your order. I had mine in about 2 weeks.

^^ This. I did a build a few yrs back off a TDK frame. The quality is amazing, body and engine mounts were dead on. You can have them set the cj frame up for the yj tub so you dont have to move any body mounts. Its more expensive than a used frame of course, but thats because its worth it.

If you are using a YJ tub it sounds like a YJ frame will be cleaner and less work.

Until he tries to install the CJ axles and CJ grill onto that YJ frame. He'll probably need a YJ gas tank too....and YJ fuel and brake lines.

Fixing that seems easier than moving all of the body mounts for the YJ tub.

Only 1 body mount on each side of a cj frame needs to be moved to use a yj tub.

Only 2 on each side don't line up and for one set, there is holes that do line up so a nut plate slides in and those are done. For the other two (the rear crossmember), they're off by 3/4" and a simple drill and tap is all that's needed. I promise you that is way easier than moving perches on both axles, notching the grill to clear the power steering box, extending the front grill frame mount, and gathering and installing/ swapping over to all the other small details that will be effected by the frame swap (engine mounting/ trans mounting/ sway bar/ fuel and brake lines/ gas tank placement, etc). Ive done YJ tub swaps onto CJ frames....its the way to go.
