CJ won't go in first

Ill be driving and come to a complete stop and Ill put it in Neutral. When the light turns green Ill go to put it in 1st and it wont go. It won't budge at all. Ill end up having to put it in 2nd and feather the clutch until I pick up enough speed. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

How much free play do you have in your clutch pedal?

Prolly around 2-3 inches... It definitely takes a good distance to engage...

To much-Readjust to 1-1 1/2" at most.
Your linkage maybe shot also.
Check the bellcrank on the firewall for excess slop.

If linkage is shot, would it be best to get a new xmission?

I'm talk'n about the clutch's linkage.
You REALLY must get a copy of the REAL Factory Service Manual and read it.
Haynes and Chilton won't do.....

You think it just might need a change of xmission fluid?

If 1st gear is seized, I think it is too late for a fluid change if indeed there is even any fluid left in it.

If it just won't go into 1st, then I would be checking engine and tranny mounts out thinking something has shifted so the gear shifter is binding up.

Grinding or the inability to get the transmission to go into the gear indicates a clutch issue.

A "locked" transmission (engine dies/rig won't move) would indicate a shift tower/fork issue, where one gear stays engaged all the time. I for the life of me can't come up with a scenario where you could lock the transmission in two gears, but have it shift normally in all the others.

Transmission goes into first gear, engine revs, but Jeep won't move indicates a sheared first gear/countershaft. It is possible that all the teeth have spit off either one and the countershaft is simply spinning without contacting anything.

There can also be the possibility the scynro dogs (C) have been damaged, or a broken but still in place syncro are jamming the engagement ring, keeping it from sliding over the offending gear.

If it goes into 2nd OK like you say and reverse, the clutch is just fine. CJ's have a tendency to eat mounts when off roaded which affects the shifter travel.

You NEED to adjust your clutch pedal freeplay first.
When is the last time you checked the transmission oil level?

Will it shift into first with the engine not running? Go through the shift pattern and if it only does it when the engine is running you have either a clutch problem or an engine mounting problem. If not then you have a xmsion problem.

If you have a T4 have you tried pulling the shifter towards second gear before going into first?

When the engine is off I can shift it into any gear. Even when its running. Its only happened to me a total of 3 times that this has happened. Every other time it slides into gear great. And this weekend I'm prolly gonna change the xmission fluid. Could it just maybe be a freak thing??? It's been cold as of recent. I don't know if that matters...

sounds like you need to adjust your clutch linkage underneath where it rides on the clutch fork. its like a 3/4 and 9/16th wrench or something like that. Try this.
