Start with a picture of the firewall connector.
We can start from there.

I have an 84 CJ harness in my 76 CJ5

Not sure what you mean?

You have the 83 harness in the jeep right now?

So you have no harness in there now and want to install one of the ones you mentioned?

Some harnesses can't be mixed because the plugs are different on the firewall.

You will either have to replace everything or figure out the one you got.

Sorry I have the 76ish one in there right now and I have about 8 wires that go nowhere and I can't figure out where any grounds are as it doesn't seem like I have any grounds. Sorry I forgot to take pics tonight I was busy with homework and such.

Yeah, the 83 and later have a larger plug than the 76 but still will fit in the same hole. Just more circuits but the 80 and later will not fit the 79 and earlier firewall plug. You will have to change the complete wiring in your jeep.

On the other hand, if the wires on the 83 harness are in better shape, then you could remove the wires from the 76 Plug and put in the 83 wires. The terminals are the same and easy to remove.

76 Connector:

And an 80 and later Connection:

Those numbers in the first on correspond to this chart.
