CJ w/360 Exhaust??

What is the general consensus regarding exhasut for a 360? I have to build it from scratch and all I have so far is non-fenderwell headers which is what I WILL be using on the motor. Was wondering what the opinons are on tubing size, cats, mufflers, h-pipe, x-pipe, and dualing or not. I will probably do turn downs after the axle at about 45 angle.

fwiw i ditched my fenderwell headers, IMO they were fugly, and sounded like arse. I dont see the need for the 1980's showboat dual exhaust anyway. Run them to a Y pipe, straight back, and turndown before the fuel tank - thats what I did and couldn't be happier..sounds awesome, nice and deep at idle, and very nice while cruising. plus its tucked up, out of sight, and out of the way.

2.25 or 2.5" duals or a single 3" is probably the most popular choices. I did dual 2.5" off my Sanderson block hugger headers on my SBC to 2.5" Magnaflow mufflers then over the axle then between the frame and rear leafs out behind the tire. Jeg's has a universal hotrod exhaust kit with aluminized tubing for $199. That was what I got. Just get your choice of mufflers and collector reducers and have at it. I did not do a h-pipe on mine but I have been thinking about putting on in with the leftover 4' piece of tubing I have. I think it will sound better. What mufflers you thinking about? Loud or quiet?

Probably something along the lines of a Flowmaster 50 series or the equivalent as far as sound goes... I dont want anything obnoxious. What about a 2 in 2 out single muffler?

If you go with a single, I'd Y into a 3 inch pipe and muffler.

http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS-Performan...60799/10002/-1 There is the link for the exhaust kit. It will require fabrication. Lots of cutting, fitting and welding. Yeah, if you choose to Y it for a single outlet 3" should be the minimum. That should give you a little more low end tourque and still have a nice rumble. My Magnaflow's are rather quiet, I really like the sound. Pretty quiet idling and around town but if you want to be noisy just stomp on it and in the mid-range they will still bark. I used to run Flowmaster mufflers but the drone kills me and the more I read on them they actually kill horsepower. Dynomax turbo mufflers are quiet and test on a dyno for the highest tourque and HP out of most any of the popular mufflers available.

X2, I have in-frame headers, a y-pipe to a single 3" with a 40 series muffler, and a turn down. I love the sound, I noticed a improvement in low end torque when I swithched from my old fender exit/glass pack combo.

I would consider finding a way to route the 3" tubing out the rear, or corner angling back about 45 degrees. I have no carpet in my CJ and the turndown under the bed of the Jeep allows some exaust fumes and extra noise inside the Jeep. Food for thought.

I have a 360 with inframe headers and I used 2.25 pipes with Thrush Welded mufflers going straight out the back about a half inch inside each shackle... sounds awesome!

Mine is like Southshore except I have full length headers. It exits at a 45* angles out the back. Sounds great and it is out of the way.

Built 304

On My Built 304 I ran headman headers to 2.25" pipe duals strait out the back with high flow cats and dual trush tubes and ran them strait out in between the frame and fuel tank next to the rear shackles. The only thing I have changed is that originally I dumped at the axel with turn downs 2 reasons I changed to loud and the exhaust smell was killing me idling and with the full soft top on just two things to consider.

Good luck with whatever you chose please tell us all what you end up doing always looking for ideas later.

2.5" Y'ed into 3" using a 50 series Flo and run it out the back like Nick said.
No need for duals if your 360 isn't a healthy street/strip build.
