Change out the bracket holding the steering box. If you have someone steer the thing while you watch the front, you will see the bracket bend. There are several different heavy duty steering brackets on the market. I went with the one from "Sam's". All the other heavy brackets were 3/8 in steel. The one from Sam's is 1/2.
http://www.sams4x4store.com/specialty.htm I have one on a CJ5 with 35's. |

Did you have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you were watching the steering box? If you can wiggle it a little bit with your hand, it'll probably move a mile when it's under load back and forth.
I just fixed this exact same problem also.. wandered all over the place. Replaced the brackets.

Nobody is saying your steering box is bad, we're saying the brackets that hold it up have become tired and weak over the years of pressure back and forth. (what size tires are you running btw?)
I don't understand why you just don't do what we're asking you to do to check to see if that's the problem. Have a wife/girlfriend/kid/dog sit in the drivers seat. You kneel in front of the jeep and keep an eyeball on the steering box. Have whoever is in the seat move the wheel back and forth 1/2 turn or so in both directions.. you'll probably see the steering box sway back and forth. If you do, replace the brackets.. if you don't.. you have another problem. Start there.

No problem.. let us know how you make out. If that's not the problem I'm sure someone here has the answer for you.

I would does as we suggested first, but there is an adjustment on the steering box itself. There is a "screw" with a locking nut on it. It is on the top of the steering box and is accessable through a hole in your frame. Loosen the nut and turn the inward and this will "tighten up" your steering box. I personnel didn't notice the steering box bracket we I would shack things down by hand. The only way I actually witnessed the problem was with the jeep on and some one running the steering back and forth. The difference after installing the new bracket was night and day.

Don't mess with the adjustment unless you know the exact procedure for it. If the box isn't bad already, it will be if you tighten it too much or not enough.
