CJ owner's who prefer hunting and shooting to trail riding...

Every four wheel drive I have owned has been used to get me where I need or want to go to hunt and target shoot. Hunting is by far, my favorite sport with bench/target shooting a close second; and, I will continue until I am confined to a bed or dead. I don't get to hunt enough but I hope that will change in the next few years as my daughter's get older.

What do you hunt: paper, Elk, Whitetail, Moose, small game, birds?

What are your tools?

Favorite tools, favorite calibers?

Do you reload?

Do you compete?

I hunt whitetail, turkey and various small and winged game here in Northeast Missouri. I am a BIG bow hunter and I also enjoy my muzzleloader.

i hunt.....mule deer, speed goats, upland birds and varmints mostly.....occasionally elk and whitetail thrown in....major reason for me buying the CJ5 was for a mobile shooting platform for ground squirrels out at my uncles place.....for big game i tend to prefer hunting out of a 1/2 ton truck.....

Love to hunt Black Tail, Elk, Boar, varmints, ducks, geese, turkey, quail, dove... I would love to start doing this with a bow too. Right now my Weatherby 300 Accumark gets the big stuff done, the .17 for the fun small stuff, The Benelli 12, 20, 28 gauge gets me into all my bird stuff...and my Jeep takes me there.

Love sporting clays and target shooting...

SC

EDIT...don't forget those wabbits...cotton tail and jack rabbits! Nothin' better than eating a crock pot wrabbit! well...Elk, Boar, Deer, Quail, Dove, Pheasant, Duck ...big huge grin...

I also hunt, whitetail deer, and turkey but I also enjoy trial riding just as much. I also ride bicycles (road bikes). As far as shooting goes I was once a very highly ranked 3D archery shooter, I alway thought I would turn Pro at 50 thats only 4 years away and I was just talking to my wife about starting back shooting this upcoming year.

Mostly whitetails. Hauled a deer out with the Jeep a couple days ago. Way cool. Few hogs. Squirrels & rabbits.

I duck hunt as well, but that involves pullin my boat on the interstate. I'll use the truck for that.

Got a variety of rifles, but my go-to is my Rem 700 in 308.

Got a sweet little Anchutz .22 that will head bust a tree rat every time. (well, when I take my time & don't rush the shot)

Killed my 2nd deer with a bow this year. That's a rush all it's own.

Our state just adopted night huntin' for hogs in the spring/summer. I plan to put a dent in the pig population big time this year. They are killin' our deer huntin'.

Cool thread, Dave. :2thumbsup:

I hunt Whitetail, hogs, and Dove primarily, as that is about it around here. My dream is a trip out west sometime, but that probably won't happen. I'd really like to go for Elk or Caribou with my bow. Spent 10 years deer hunting from horseback, and that is a lot of fun.

My primary rifles are 7MM Rem Mag for distance, but I also shoot a .243 or .30-06. For less than 200 yeards I typically use my .30-.30... an all-around great gun. Probably my favorite rifle is my Savage .17 HMR. I don't hunt deer with it, but I have killed a few 4-legged predators around here with it. For horseback hunting I used my 1100.

Bow hunting is my all-time favorite method, and I use a Hoyt Trykon... the last bow I will ever own.

Started reloading this year and having fun with it. My oldest son and I also got started with IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) this year shooting competitive pistols in self-defense scenarios.

forgot the rifle part.....my go to big game rifle is a Kimber Montana in 260 rem for everything from yotes to elk and a Ruger 10/22 for ground squirrels.....

I'm happy to live in a state where just about anything is on the table - from pheasants to big horn. The lottery is a cruel, cruel game, but if you play your cards right you can hunt something new just about every year. This year was elk with a ML, antelope with a rifle, pheasants and bobcat with the 12gauge. Last year was bear with the ML and elk with a rifle.

I'm in it for the adventure, and I like going after something new in someplace new as often as I can. More often than not, coming home empty handed (the most common way for me to come home) means coming home with some great stories, like this cow moose and her calf, that I shot with my camera, who came up to within 5 yards of the rock I was perched on:

I mostly hunt birds and rabbits in the desert. It is hard to get drawn for anything else in NM. I do go to Texas for Hawgs.

12 gauge for birds, 300 win mag and 450 Marlin for hawgs and deer if I get drawn, 17 HMR for rabbits.

I have taken a couple of buffalo, one with a 458 Win MAg and one with the 300.

I too use my Jeep more for hunting than trail riding. Here in the desert the short wheel base comes in very handy getting across aroyos and narrow trails.

I love hunting and guns. It's always hard for me to choose where to spend my money. Jeeps or guns. I wish i was rich so i didn't have this problem. Started reloading this year also and it's been fun so far. My guns range from .22's to a 45-70 sharps. I like old school guns like lever actions and single action revolvers. love to shoot and i just flat out love guns. I think it's a disease. I'm 23 years old and can't quit buying guns for some reason. I hunt some but not a ton. I'm more of a collector i guess you could say

I hunt whitetails with my .270 savage!

Attachment 170807

I also have an old winchester model 94 lever gun in .30-30 that I carry in bad weather and brush.

I hunt birds with my 870 and paper with my .22's and 9mm Taurus. I just scored a rossi yout combo in .22/20Ga for my son who will be 9 in march. He can use it to carry (unloaded) to learn firearm safety when we go out hunting. I like to shoot!

i have the same problem.....since setting foot in Shiloh Sharp's building in Big Timber ive wanted a hunting weight(~11 pounds, shorter barrel) 50 cal.....also think i need a drilling, prolly a 16x16x9.3x72 cause i never know if im gonna run across birds or a deer on alot of walks and the girls dont like to play gun bearer as they are usually hunting aswell and carrying their own gun....course i also have about $2,000 worth of stuff i want to do to the Jeep.....really hard to prioritize spending between the gun and Cj....then im also supposed to be saving for a trip to Australia in 2013 to go after water buff and boars and whatever else we can find.....
