CJ Hardtop Lift Gates

So what's the latest poop on replacement lift gates for factory CJ hardtops?

I'd love to hear about successful lift gate repairs/replacements.

The gate on my '81 CJ is so leaky that now my rear floor pan is rusting out. I'd try to patch the holes in the lower corners, but I'm afraid the whole thing will crumble when I remove the glass.

Original gates were steel. Steel reproductions are not available anymore. Fiberglas repros are available, but the price on the 'glas repos have skyrocketed. By the time you consider the addtional cost of seals, glass install, & paint - you can buy a whole new replacement soft top and have some change left over. I hate to junk the rest of the hardtop; it's in otherwise great condition.

What years are interchangable?

Anyone had any luck fabricating a replacment lift gate from acrylic (plexiglass)? I suspect it wouldn't be strong enough to handle the hinge loads.

I have to add to this, my hard is pretty good, but the shocks are about dead. Anyone know where I can get a new pair?

guess various auto parts stores have a universal lift strut kit with universal mounting hardware.

as far as lift gate, try looking for a hard top for sale. buy it, get what you need, then flip the rest.

much luck!

I'm in a similar boat. My top is great, but the rear liftgate is thrashed. I have been wanting to look into the replacement glass from an 87-89 YJ glass. I believe it may fit, and it still has the bottom part with the T-handle in it. I just need to get a hold of one to test fit. I just hate to spend hundreds of dollars to test it and find it doesn't fit. I think it would also be a good replacement in that it doesn't have the big metal surround, offering a bit of better visibility out the rear glass.

A couple years ago a guy had an NOS CJ7 liftgate on ebay. In his listing he claimed that the liftgate was also correct for the newer Jeepsters. I have no idea if that is a fact or not but it just may be worth checking into. They sure look similar.

Nope, looks like the angle from top to bottom is too steep. The liftgate on the CJ is a little more squared off than that.

CJ Hardtop Lift Gates

J C Whitney now has a fiberglass lift gate in their catalog with price about 1/2 of what others have. Brand is "TopLine". JCW also says no drilling required.

This will probably be my next order. I need to get the jeep weather tight so the rear floor quits rusting!

Wow, not a bad price. $230 I'll be getting one of these too.

A piece of advice. Don't use the factory metal liftgate shocks on a fiberglass replacement. They are too strong and will tear the embedded bushings right out of the fiberglass. Big weight difference.

I don't believe that for a second. I just finished stripping down my steel liftgate and most of the weight is the glass. The metal itself is quite thin and lightweight.

I'll save you some time, Dan. YJ glass is 45.375" CJ 44.250", this is at the middle. The YJ glass also has less angle on the sides. Height is about the same.

Been there done that. It's not just the weight, it's the connection too. Suit yourself. You've been warned!

I'm in the process of refurbishing a steel lift gate, and I didn't really need to remove any hardware, but to paint it I figured I would. Big mistake. Nearly every bolt broke or stripped. After finally getting the hinges off, I now see that the backer plate that the screws thread into is all rusted and bendy. Looks like I'll be cutting it open for a repair.

Don't have a picture on hand, but I blasted my lift gate and painted last winter along with a lot of bondo and paint on the hardtop. Was in great condition to begin with though. Brand new lift gate seal and it still leaks like a sieve. Anyways good luck.
