CJ Front Bench Seat

Just out of curiosity does anyone know how common a front bench seat was in a CJ7 or when they were options. In Skeer's built post his CJ had a bench and a few people commented they had never seen one. The first CJ to give me the jeep fever I currently suffer from was a 76 CJ7 and it had a front bench. This was back in 1990 and I was 18. Those were the days!

from what I hear bench seats are quite rare.

Is your rear tire larger than the front?

yes they were a factory option but i don't know the years, i've heard a ranger bench fits though if you want one, otherwise the stock was a 60/40 bench with leather covered lowbacks

No 33 x 12.50 swampers all the way around with no lift at all. The rubbed pretty good. Luckly the jeep blew up before to much damage was done to the tires.

I put the same tires on my 78 CJ after that which had a 4 inch skyjacker lift, some Confur shackles t150 and a 304 then a 360. Not to thread drift but I guess its my thread so here are some before and after pictures of my 78. This one was my baby before my current baby.

They are not listed as an option in my 1981 and 1982 brochures, though I know they were an option on the 70s era CJs.

I wonder if they stopped making it an option because the 1980s CJs using the SR4/T4/T5 has the trans/case shifters practically between the bucket seats?

or maybe just unpopular? I used to think they allowed for 2+1 adults to sit in the front. Brochures for the CJ-5A used to show 2+1 in the front, but they had column shifters.

Bench

I saw one for sale up here in Texarkana a couple of years ago that had the bench seat. Only one I've ever seen.

It pretty similar to the one that sbcranger linked execpt it had a twist handle that open and closed it. It was in the jeep when I got it but the handle was broken the whole time I owned that one. I sold that jeep in 1996.

MoC- As Dave mentioned mine came out of a Comanche that I found in our local junk yard. I got it for $30. It needs a seat cover which I will get around to one day. I had to build the frame for it. One of the biggest benefits, for me, is that I have more room with the bench. I made the frame so the seat sits a little lower... plenty of steering wheel clearance and head room. I'm 6'3" and 225. The Comanche bench fits pretty well. I don't know about a Ranger bench, but it is probably more comfortable! I have some foam to restuff my bench when I feel motivated enough to pull the seat out. Also, since I don't care about anyone having access to the back of my Jeep, I am not concerned that my bench is not split. It does tilt forward however if needed.
