CJ 7 with YJ family bar

I have an '83 cj7 with a family bar from a '93 wrangler. I'm wanting to buy a bikini top for it because my current top that fit with the old roll bar wont work. My guess is I need a strapless that fits a '93 wrangler. The tech support guy from the place I buy my parts from is telling me that the windshield on the wrangler is 4 inches wider than the cj and the top would be real floppy on the sides. Everything I read tells me that the parts, including the tub and windshield, on the cj and yj are interchangable. Any sugestions as to wich top I need to buy?

I would just buy one for the 93 Wrangler. They are same size. If the hard top and Soft top fit on both so will the Bikini top. He may be confussing the YJ with a TJ or JK. Either way he is wrong.

waterdowg is correct, the top should fit fine.

The tech is wrong; although there are minor differences between YJ and CJ windshield frames, they are dimensionally the same.

how much work was it to put in the family roll bar and seat belts for it. i am thinking of changing mine because of safety but also to provide some shade for the back seat kids.

just adding to what was said above, the windshield retainer channel 51209-01 is the same for CJ/YJ, too.

This is my cage with the rear part of the yj family cage, i have the front bars as well but havent put them on yet but they do fit no problem on the cj window, and that is my cj hard top sitting behind my jeep that fits fine with the family cage.

Fits just fine...this has been a common retro-fit for almost 20 years now, though I wouldn't bother with the front bars. If you're concerned enough about your rear passengers to do the retro-fit, then you should be doing a cage up front out of concern for yourself and your front seat passenger

'86 CJ-7 Laredo: 4.2,T-999,D300,D30/D44,'94 YJ tub, full cage, Shrockworks rockers, OYR corners, AC,cruise, restored seats,3 tops,2.5" Superlift,F-T shackle reversal, RS9000x's,35" Dunlop Mud Rovers.

i have to remove the spreader bars on mine when i put the hard top on, but i don't mind. i like the front spreader bars, they make it easier to climb up in there. something to grab ahold of.

I really don't care about the rear cage portion, but I would like the spreader bars. Every once in a while I have a passenger reach for some support and I think about those bars.
