cj-6 to cj-7

Hey all, I have a shot to buy a 72 cj-6 in really good shape for cheap. I really want a cj-7 but cannot find any in decent shape. Question is can I shorten the 6 (body and frame) and would it even be feasable?

NO, please don't ruin a rare CJ-6 by trying to shorten it.

A CJ-7 sits on a different frame and tub and drives and feels very different than a CJ-6.

I have both and am tellling you straight....if you want a 7, wait for a good 82 to 86 to come along.

i recommend just getting the CJ-6. if its for a good price, you cant go wrong. Unless you really want the cj7, look at some from all different price ranges, it something I should have done :/

Good lord man - don't chop the CJ6. Cj7's are everywhere - if that's really what you want, wait for one and it will soon come. In the meantime, send me the link for the CJ6 because I'm going to buy it!!!

There were approximately 80 bazillion CJ7's made but only around 50,000 CJ6's. Please don't destroy a classic. If you can't find a CJ7 you must not be looking very hard.

just another vote now but gonna say it anyway... wait for a cj7 you will have much better luck finder parts and working on it. try to find some aftermarket parts or oem for a cj6 you find that a cj7 is much easier to shop for

Well, I've been looking at craigslist, ebay, local, beating the bushes, etc. for awhile now. Everything I've looked at is clapped out or too expensive. I only have a grand to spend right now for a project. All I really need is a solid body and frame (roller preferably). I know the starting budget is low but I have an itch to start on something. The 6 is a running vehicle that the only rust is the drivers floor pan, It comes with the factory hard top that is missing a side window and it needs a new gas tank. The frame is good and I can buy it for 900.00. AND it's here. From what I can gather the 6 is only 8 inches longer wheelbase than a 7. So maybe it won't be so bad.

If you want a shorter version of a CJ6, get a CJ5, the CJ6 is pretty much a stretched CJ5, on some of them you can even see the area behind the doors where and extra metal panel was placed. Please for the love of Jeeps don't chop up a CJ6, or any CJ for that matter, that is why we have YJs!
