CJ-5 with a Go Devil flat head engine in Italy

Hi All, this early CJ-5 in the guise of an M38A1 here in Italy, has a flat head engine. The owner claims he bought the Jeep as it is now. There is no documentation of any engine swaps. Did Willys ever produce CJ-5 with flat head engines? Would a flat head fit easily in to a CJ5 without much modification and the transmission would be compatible?

The L head & F head engines are interchangeable.
CJ-5's never came with the L head...at least in the US.

X2
Looks like the firewall has been cut, 12V conversion, and an alternator.
I also notice the frame is sans the M series reverse shackles.
