Again, I am a diehard Chevy fan but we can go piece by piece and compare how much easier it is to put an AMC V8 in a CJ than a Chevy or Ford V8.

However, I can play both sides....there is easy, and there is cheap (inexpensive)

You can bolt a 5.7 or 4.3 right to the GM 151 bellhousing so no adapter is needed. You will most likely need a 1990 +/- Camaro starter for a 5.0 to work with the GM 151 flywheel, I believe this is a 153 tooth flywheel.

If you don't mine a flex fan with a short spacer or electric fans like the Ford Contour setup clearance between the radiator and firewall is not problem.

If you have a radiator shop in you area, you can have them swap the inlet and outlets cheap.

If you have a few pieces of scrap steel tubing, round and square you can make motor mounts for almost nothing, just use some poly leaf spring bushings from Autozone.

You can piece together an exhaust using a basic Flowmaster kit as an example, or take it to a local muffler shop and spend a 150.00.

It depends on how you want to build your Jeep....

chevy chevy chevy. weight is realy not a big deal a 5.3 weighs less then a 258. the chevy path you may spend a little more putting it in (a little ) but there a better motor parts are cheeper and make much more power for a lot cheeper . amc 360 is a mutt its made from a bunch of diff. auto makers parts . the dodge is good i like it alot had one in a duster. not a huge ford guy . go 350 or you could pull a 400 out of a burb

I'd say build it to your eventual goal.

I did the 258 to 360 swap in my 81 and it's fun and all, but fuel injection really takes the cake here. For my next jeep project i'm going 5.3 lm7.

If you want a "Muscle Jeep" as I affectionately call mine, then by all means 360 away, but if you want a good wheeling rig, that can wheel some extreme angles, FI is the only way to go.

It all depends what you want and what you can find.

As a Ford fan, I'd put a 302 or a 351 in it or if you are lucky to find one a 289. But I love AMC too a properly restored 360 will run forever if taken care of and will need little maintenance.

One only needs to look through the engine parts sections of Summit or Jegs to determine this. There is at least an order of magnitude more parts available for the Chevy as compared to AMC, and probably at least 30 % more than available for Ford. Then look at the prices. You will get far more bang for the buck with Chevy and a pretty much unlimited choice on how you want to put one together. And there is good reason they are so popular-they perform really well.

I'm in the same boat with regard to my '74 CJ-6, only I've already got the 304 with a swapped in T-18, so my intent was to go with the 360 and add either the Howell or AFI system. Bottom line, I want a hunting/fishing/trail rig that starts and runs whenever I turn the key, and doesn't have a problem on incines, bumps, and 5000ft changes in elevation.

I'm actually losing a lot of sleep over this decision, so I am watching this thread closely!

You're in a better position than I am, going from a 304 to a 360 is a direct bolt in, same size block, same bolt pattern... Coming from a 258 I've got a few more issues (some are actually related to my Jeep )

Ok Transmission time

If I go with an auto tranny I'm thinking about the TF727 although to be honest with you, being a Buick man and driving a Ford I really don't know much about Chrysler or Jeep transmissions. My question is do I have to get one from a Jeep or will from any Chrysler work? Not sure if the spline count on the output would be the same as the input on my Dana 300 or if the two would even mount up to the tail shaft.

Jeep 727 has the same internals, but a different case than Dodge. AMC 360 motors came out in '69, but they had others before that and none of the internals are from other manufacturers. Only the dist and carbs. They had a 327 before Chev made one of the same size.

Did a little bit of checking, may go with a 999 only because I'm not sure what I want to do for a lift yet and I understand there are some clearance issues with the 727 unless I have at least a 4 inch lift. If I can find one around here in good shape cheap I'll go that route, if not I'll pick up the 3 speed and Dana 20 from kw89425.

I hate indecision (seems like I'm in a perpetual state of it tough )
