charcoal canister help needed

Here's what I have. I popped the cap off that says "do not remove" and found nothing. I was expecting to find a diaphram from what I have read.

The strange part to me is that I can't blow through the nipple on the cap. There is no hole for the vacuum to operate the diaphram. I looked, and cleaned, and poked around with wire to try to find it, but it's completely sealed as far as I can tell.

Is the diaphram just smashed down solid?? I can't figure out what's going on.

Everything else seems OK. I don't want to break it, or order a new can, and find out the diaphram is there, just stuck.

This link explains the function of the canister, and how to test it.

Good luck,

Matt

I've been reading whatever I can find.

What doesn't make sense to me is that I am sitting here with the cap, and the nipple in my mouth, sucking and blowing until my eyeballs are ready to pop out of my head, and there is absolutely nothing happening.

The diaphram is either there, and stuck tight.

Or missing, and the hole for the vacuum to move the missing diaphram is clogged up, and I simply can't find it.

I can't find a picture of the underside of the cap to compare to.
The cap feels like i't just thick plastic, but has a rubbery look to the underside.

I've been reading about using one from a Grand Cherokee. I can pick a new one up at Advance Auto for $25. For what it costs, I might as well just grab a new one.
You can grab me a 401, th400, and Q-trac setup though.
J/K but would be nice......

the pic isnt clear

but are there small bleed holes on the underside?. i would try and blow air in from the underside of the cap and see if it is released through the nipple. im guessing you wouldent want vacume to have an effect on the nipple cause it would cavitate the fuel tank. it should only allow trapped pressure to escape? i know the purge signal sllows vac to be applied to that cap but it dosent evac from that port. possibly a built in vac delay valve in the cap?

From what I understand, there is (should be) a diaphram under the cap. When it gets vacuum, it sucks in the diaphram, and uncovers a port in the part of the canister that the cap goes on to (There are two ports, one sitting higher than the other).
The vacuum acts as a switch, opening the ports via the diaphram only during high vacuum situations.
