Carter Carb Help----Carb Guru's

Hey guys,

Heres the deal, i have a rebuilt engine I am trying to get started. I ve got the timing close. The engine will start and die quickly after. Runs good if the choke is held down but once i take the choke off it dies.

What do you think is the problem?
Should i be looking for a rebuild kit?

I would suspect the empty lines kicked off enough rust to plug the gas filter. Been there, done that.

Oh, be sure you put the filter in right side up, the center outlet goes to the carb and the top outlet goes to the return line.

And a $20.00 carb kit will do it wonders usually, they (all carbs) are supposed to get a kit every major tune up or when you need plugs. Most are badly neglected...

Well, I went through a few gas filters when I first started up a system that sat empty for a year and the tank was plastic, so it was just rust from the lines.

I even keep a spare gas filter under the seat because I off road and dirt collects behind the gas cap so some always falls in when I fill it.

A cheap fix if that's it.

A vacuum leak usually makes for high revs...

Goody,

This is very important time in the engines life. This is time the engine and cam need to be broken in and ran. Not sure what your problem is but no one has put this bit of caution up yet. Even if you have to put a carb that your know runs on a 258 it better than messing up your new engine build

????
