This is the hitch on a donor XJ I have in the shop. I would love to hear the story behind it...

Looks like his breakaway switch cable was shorter than his safety chains.

Good point Matt. That's why I check my trailer everytime I stop somewhere and out of sight of it, just in case somebody decides to be funny and see what happens when it's not there. Once, not far from where I live, some smarty unlatched the back door on a stock trailer at an intersection while the rig was stopped. When he took off the door flew open and about a dozen hogs went out the back. Quite a mess to catch all them.

I actually left the pin out of mine last weekend. It did a hell of a number on my tailgate when the boat bounced into it. The safety cables and hitch slots did fine though. I've been towing things for 15 years and have never done that before. That's what happens when you get in a rush.

Been trying to find this picture I took a couple summers ago. I forgot to latch the top of the pintle closed, so I drove 40 miles with the lunette just sitting in the hook, some highway and some country backroads.. somehow it never came off! Gonna drive me nuts til I find it now...

Was gonna say, maybe they forgot to flip the latch down?
