Can't shift into first

Hi all, hopefully someone can identify what I am experiencing. I am about 2 months into my " new " CJ and am curious about my shifter issue. I've tried to look at other threads but haven't found anything that matches. I have an 86 CJ 7 i6 automatic transmission 3 speed with the shifter on the steering wheel. All the gears on the shifter works besides first. I can't move the shifter all the way to the first position in other words. All the gears run through fine when in drive, I can manually shift into second but can't manually go to first. It's like there isn't a first position on the shifter. Anyone have ideas or have had this happen to them? I don't really need to get it to go into first manually but was just curious if it is a sign of things to come. Thanks for any help
