Can't find head bolts

I want to replace the cylinder head bolts in my 1983 258 4.2 engine and I can't find them on the internet. None of the kits have have the bolts with the studs on the end. Am I missing something?

I plan to get an aluminum valve cover. Do I need to get those bolts with the studs on the end with an aluminum valve cover?

I just purchased regular head bolts for my 78 thru Summit with no issues. P/N ARP-112-3601. Give them a call on the correct size for your engine.

No it did not include the stud bolts. My engine also had the stud bolts. I don't know why they were used on the original engines. Maybe for installation at the factory? Maybe someone who knows will chime in. Anyway the bolts I order worked fine.

The stud bolts are used for valve cover retention on many of the 81 to 85 engines also they are used for accessory mounting. Remember these engines are built for AMC cars too. It's cheaper to build one engine than many different configurations.

If you look closely at the photo just behind the carb vac break and just in front of the AIR Injection hose you can see 2 bolts with the valve cover hold down washer and nuts on two head bolts. this is a factory '81 258

There is one of mine without the studed bolts it is a 4.0 head but you get the idea

It took me a while to find the right head bolts for my 1983 258, so i thought i would update this thread to help everyone else out.

I ended up ordering ARP's 258 kit from Summit (ARP-112-3601) and found out after I got the package that they were 1/2" and I needed 7/16". I looked up on the internet and found out that AMC switched their head bolts from 1/2 to 7/16 in 1981. Summit or ARP does not have a kit for the 7/16". You have to piece it out. I called ARP directly for the part numbers. ARP recommended that i call Summit back with the part numbers to get a better price. I called Summit back gave them the part numbers for the bolts i need. The price was better than going through ARP directly even though they are coming from ARP's warehouse.

Thats the boring story. Here is the info you need to order 7/16" ARP head bolts for the 258:
- 7 short bolts (3.75"), HAP3.780-5, $2.57 each
- 7 long bolts (4.5"), HAP4.500-5, $3.85 each (this was ARP's cheaper price which Summit matched)
- 14 washers, 200-8509, $0.72 each (washers are strongly recommended by ARP)

Total price with the $9.95 handling fee= $64.97

All of these bolts are head bolts, not stud bolts. I was told that I will not need the stud bolts since I have an aftermarket aluminium valve cover.

I hope this helps everyone. This was the info that I was not able to find on the internet. (Probably be cause I'm blind)

fcb212003, I should have given you more info on the different sizes for head bolts when I posted the P/N. Sorry. I thought if you called them they would know which size was needed. Glad you got it sorted out and thanks for posting your find. I'm sure it will help someone out in the future.
