My CJ5 does 3.5mph in 1st lo @1.8k rpm, tops out at 40 in 4th hi @ 3.8k rpm. I feel like my lips are peeled back at 40! I cannot imagine 70 or 90mph, scary.

Thrashing?

Your might go fast, but mine will go anywhere.

3.8 rpm! I'm scared of that high rpm. I'm screaming at 3200.

I have a SBC in mine. It "can" go fast but I'm not inclined to go more then 75 usually. Due to like other ppl said the bump steer and the wandering.
But she's quick to get to 40 I'll say that

I can't scream at 3800 LOL my lips are flapping too hard. I guess I could put up the windshield.

I have a SBC tied to a SM420 4spd, going nowhere fast but anywhere at all.

I agree. With my 79CJ7 with the 304 and a T150 3-speed, the only screaming that occurs above 3,500RPM is me sounding like "a little guhrl" <Arnold's I'll be back voice>…

Like someone else said, I really try to avoid anything requiring speeds faster than my two lane mountain highway, which is maybe 45 - 50MPH on some of the longer straight aways. Had my share of radical wandering after lifting it and adding 33 X 12.50's. Have that pretty well nailed down but she can still make me pucker above 55 especially in the middle of traffic. Before we got her straightened out, I had to get an old vinyl seat cover surgically removed because I accidentally went above 30!

Good luck with your racing career!

Best regards,

With a 3 speed have as much fun thrashing it as you want just not in 3rd gear. If you keep your hard driving only in 1st and 2nd you will keep it slow enough that you most likely wont kill yourself. An overnight in the hospital at the most.

My '79 304/T-150 used to bury the speedo w/a 2.5" Rancho lift and 33x12.50s. Well above 85. Of course that only was done after a complete F-end overhaul, while everything was still fresh. After 5-10k when things loosened up, speeds went down accordingly. And this was only on lonely intersate straights. Usually while collecting about 5,000 cold tablets for the "Lab"!
W/o a full cage/harness, 75+ is nuts. And that's from a certifiable LOON!

I've also learned that sometimes... when people don't agree with you .... its best to hold them down and kidney punch them till they agree with you

LAB? I wish I go back and unread that. Might want to consider dumping that post. Others in L.E. might read into that as what we could call a "clue".
Just saying.

When mine was still stock a few years ago I out ran my buddy's dodge diesel with my cj5, the speedo didn't work so I really don't know how fast I wound up going. but I do know it broke 100 a few times following him. It's is a scary ride and I probably will NOT do it again.

I didnt lift mine and just slapped in a stock 350 TBI connected to the AX-15, Let me tell you overdrive is awsome. Althought the AX-15 isnt a steep overdrive it puts me right around 2100 RPMs and seems to be in the sweet spot on that 350. I dont have cruise control so I just rest my foot on the gas and the on the interstate if I dont pay attention, ill find myself going 80+ . its scary I dont mind going 70-75 but over that is just asking for a ticket.Kinda Hard to talk my way out of that one .

PS My steering is in good shape along with new leaf springs so I just need one hand to drive makes trips to dallas nice when I pass some kid in his ricer
