I was sitting in the driveway with my Jeep (1964 tuxedo park) idling, the motor sputtered and died. It's never done this before. After it died it'd crank but not start. First thing I thought was fuel, and sure enough no gas in the fuel filter (there is gas in the tank). So I ordered a new mechanical fuel pump with glass bowl, I took off the original pump and the lever arm that rides the cam on the old one is a couple of inches longer than the new one. Two questions, #1 does that matter? #2 when I put the new one or the old one back in is there a procedure to follow, meaning does the are click in to something or is it just slide in and bolt down? Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Here are a couple of things to check on the original unit:
Put the pump in a vice and work the arm. You should get suction on the inlet side and pressure on the outlet side.
If you have this, then the issue probably isn't the pump.
If you cant get pressure/suction, then disassemble the pump and inspect the valves. There could be a bit of crud in one of them causing the issue. Clean them out with carb cleaner.
Inspect the diaphragm to insure it isn't leaking.
If the arm and arm pivot are good, you can purchase a rebuild kit and do the pump yourself.
Mine would die at idle also and I replaced the pump but still die. Turns out I had a hole in my fuel line that would suck air into the line. At speed, the pump went fast enough to get enough gas to the carb but at idle, there was just too much air in the line to suck the gas up.
I would have to crank and crank to get enough fuel to start. Was faster to just pour a shot glass full of fuel to get it started.
The hole would allow the gas in the line to drain back into the tank when stopped.
So check out the old pump and if it pumps fine, check your lines. You could probably drop a fuel line from the pump inlet into a gas tank and see if it pumps OK and not die at idle.
