Can't Get To My Zerks

Stock CJ7 with greasable rear drive shaft u-joints. I can't get a standard grease gun end into the space where the grease fitting lives. Is there a grease gun adapter that will fit into tight spaces? Not greasing my u-joints is making me nervous.

do you have traditional zerks or the inverted style? the former is a PITA, the latter much easier to access. Before i switched over, i used to have to jack up rear of heep to force droop to open space in u joint to slip in the grease gun tip.

Look it's a 4.6!

oh yeah, the bonus is once its done, the first 30 miles will smell like baked grease as the excess gets flung all over and onto exhaust parts.

Look it's a 4.6!

I put mine on with the zerks facing the wrong direction the last time I put u-joints in (they should angle towards the center of the driveshaft). Now I can't access them anymore. I simply take off the bolts holding it to the rear yolk, move it around to get to the zerks, and put it back together.
It takes about 5 minutes to undo four nuts with a 1/2" wrench.

One of these days I simply need to flip the u-joints over.

Thanks for the quick replies folks. Sounds like undoing the yolk bolts to get at them may be the easiest fix. I have to do that anyway, because the zerk on the front u-joint is broken off.

I don't use greaseable U-joints any more. I used Spicer blue for decades, but when I last had a new driveshaft made, the shop manager convinced me to switch to Spicer Life Series. I've not had to replace one for 8 years now (knock on wood). The blue ones would only last me about 5-6 years (and yes, I did grease them routinely), so maybe the shop manager was on to something... They do cost a little more, but if they last longer and save me a little maintenance time, I'm okay with that.

I also discovered that the Life Series are what came stock in my Blazer, and they are still original with 140,000 miles on them.

You can get yourself a needle fitting if you can't get the standard size grease gun
fitting to go on due to space restrictions.

I have the one shown below that I bought about 20 years ago when I got my 1985 Jeep, and I saw that all the
standard size grease gun ends would not fit into the U-joints.

This needle adapter just snaps onto any standard grease gun because it has a zerk on one side (shown on left side of the picture)
and then you just press the other side into the center of the zerk in your U-joint to depress the ball bearing
and create the seal, and then pump in the grease.

You have to hold the needle end of the adapter onto the U-joint zerk as you pump the grease gun, so a gun that can be operated with one hand is needed.

When your done, just pop the needle adapter off the grease gun, and finish doing the rest of
the Jeep as normal. Zip Zip...

Oh, and these things only cost about 7 or 8 bucks. You should be able to get one
at any Pep Boys or other car place.

Look for one with a longer 'nose' tho.

I think the picture is slightly distorted.

The "nose" or needle section is actually a little over an inch and a half long,
or basically the same length as the back section that covers the zerk.

In the 20 plus years I have had mine, I can't tell you how many people have asked
me if they could borrow it after seeing it in action.

Agree, they are one of the handiest lube tools I have ever had/used.
I have had mine for the better part of 30 years now.
Won't loan mine either.....

I have 2 of them. I did put a slight bend in the 'neck' of one to get the needed clearance for the DS zerk's on my Jeep.

Make sure you use the type shown in the picture.

Don't use a regular needle injector. They are the ones that look like a huge hypodermic needle.
They are just a straight needle that jabs right into the zerk and push the ball bearing down.

That type does not seal against the inside diameter of the zerk where the ball bearing is
like the one shown.

I have used the standard niddle adapter with no problem. You just have to make sure you have it pointed around the ball in the zerk. I have had trouble getting grease in the zerk whenever I put hte needle tip right up against the ball in the zerk. If you put it right next to the zerk in the hole the grease will flow in no problem. I haven't had any trouble with gease spillage either doing it this way.
