Can I use narrow track carrier bearing caps on a wide track axle

I purchased a wide track dana 30 housing this weekend and was wondering if I can use my narrow track carrier bearing caps to build it? The PO of the wide track housing didn't have the caps just the housing. Thanks JC

You shouldn't. Carrier bearing caps are line bored with the center section. Using caps from another axle housing can distort the carrier bearings as the holes may not be perfectly round.

This is 100% correct.

There should be letters stamped, not arrows. One side will have an A that's rightside up (just an example) and the other side will have it upside down. Match the orientation of the arrows to the stamp on the case along with the location to get them on correctly.

Actually one side will have a letter that is vertical and the other side will have that same letter horizontal. Match the letter orientations on the bearing caps with the orientation of the letters on the face of the diff housing. Once you see the letters it becomes obvious. I've not seen a diff that did not have the vertical/horizontal letter marks but I assume there are exceptions.

A "quick and dirty" way to check the caps is to install them and then see if you can "feel" a lip at the mating surfaces. If they're the correct caps in the correct orientation, the parting line should be smooth to the touch..
