Can anyone tell me if this is a good deal?

Hi everyone! I am currently looking into buying an older jeep wrangler strickly for off-roading use (maybe some fun in the summer months too). Currently I own a 2003 KJ (liberty sport). But I found a CJ-7 for sale that I am interested in. The seller is asking $2995 or BO. Here is what comes with it.

CJ-7 1985
258 V-6 Rebuilt engine in 1999
Rebuilt tranny (5spd) in 1999
Rebuilt carb in 1999
3 tops and 3 sets of doors
2 sets of tires
4 inch suspension lift
New brakes put on last year, rotors, calipers, brake lines, etc...
New muffler put on last year, everything from the cat. converter back.
Replaced the rear drive shaft
New shackle lift
4 off-roading lights (2 on front bumper, 2 at corner of windsheild and door).
Winch in the front (did not ask if it works)

The body does have a little bit of rust, but nothing too bad. I would assume this is a good deal; it is the guys daily ride, but he needs something a little more economical on gas since he is excepting a new job an hour away from home. If I could get any input from anyone that would be great! I plan on looking at it tomorrow.

Thanks!

Looks like a deal to me. But before you go to the bank put on some work clothes, crawl underneath with a screwdriver, or other suitable implement, and check out the frame. I didn't check mine thoroughly enough before I brought it home and found a nice crack right over a spring hanger. Of course now I've good a good excuse to buy a welder
If the frame is in good shape I say go for it.

Thanks guys!!

Well I went and looked at this CJ Saturday night. My father and I even took it out for a quick drive (he's the mechanic in the family, I'm the computer guy). He said it was mechanically sound (and the frame looked good) but he felt the guy (kid probably only 20 or so) was asking too much. The reason being the body was pretty rotted. There was a huge hole in the floor board where the drivers feet are and in various other locations in the body. I had asked if he would sell the vehicle with only one top and set of doors, and he didn't want too. I don't need all those extras when this will be a project vehicle. The guy said he put in $3000 the vehicle and he wanted $3000 when we were there, so I felt he wouldn't budge much. I told him I would have to think it over, but I don't want something that needs to have the body replaced in a year... So I will wait and see.

Thanks a lot for both of your inputs!! I saw them both before taking a look at it. Thanks again!!

If you end up getting it, take a look at what tops are going for on Ebay. You maybe could recoup some of your expenses selling the extra tops. If they are in good shape, they could fetch a pretty penny.

CJ-7 1985
258 V-6 Rebuilt engine in 1999 -not a V-6. That's be a strait 6, 4.2L AMC 258. Most of the 80's Cj's you see will have these.
Rebuilt tranny (5spd) in 1999t-5 - not the best tranny but not the worst either.
Rebuilt carb in 1999 a rebuilt stock carter carb? These are notorious for having problems idling.
3 tops and 3 sets of doors people will buy anything and everything you have, so get these with it if you buy it, and sell them. You'll get a decent chunk of change back
2 sets of tires
4 inch suspension lift
New brakes put on last year, rotors, calipers, brake lines, etc...
New muffler put on last year, everything from the cat. converter back.
Replaced the rear drive shaft
New shackle lift anything over a 1" shackle lift is generally frownded upon as it effects your handling and creates a "wandering" feeling at higher speeds
4 off-roading lights (2 on front bumper, 2 at corner of windsheild and door).
Winch in the front (did not ask if it works)

I really wouldnt decline the offer just because there are a few rusty spots in the body. All CJ tub's are at least 18 years old and none of them were galvanized. This means they almost all rust. Pulling the tub off and putting a later model galvanized YJ tub on might cost a few hundred bucks and take a week or so of your time.
With that said, if you are not mechanically edept to some degree, and dont want to spend the time wrenching or paying out the butt for someone else to do it, you really might want to consider getting a YJ. They have fuel injected engines (post 1990 or so), galvanized bodies, wider frames, a wider stance, and just as much aftermarket support as a CJ. Just something to think about.

Thanks!

for $2995 you should buy it. Everybody always wants to bargain over the original price in order to feel like they got a good deal, but $3000 is not bad, esp. if the frame is good, and considering the rebuilt/replaced parts. Body rust is not the end of the world.
