Can anyone ID this hardtop year?

This is on craigslist for $100. I have a 79 CJ5. I know there is a slight windshield variant <> 75. Can anyone tell by looking, or know what it should measure?

The fuel opening for a tank under the drivers seat, the font of the "Jeep" lettering stamped into the tub, and the short fenders give that tub away as pre-71 (first full year of rear gas tank). If the top was on that tub it's probably not going to fit your '79.

I don't think it was. . . I think he just had a smorgasbord of jeep parts.

Have him measure the width where it attaches to the top of the windshield frame. IIRC, 76 and up are 61" and 75 and older are 65". The measurements may not be correct, but I'm 100% sure that there's a 4" difference between the two year ranges.

He just told me he had tried it on a 74 and it did not fit the windshield quite right. Thoughts?

That's entirely dependant on what he means by "quite right".

Ask him specifics of what didn't fit. If it was too narrow for the windshield frame on the '74 then it's likely made for '76 and up. I can't do much more than hazard a guess with the info given.

Are there doors with it? The Angle on the doors to window frame would give you a big clue as to how it fits.

I don't think you would get $500 for it without doors though.

I agree. Especially since it appears the back hatch is missing.

I'm wondering when the first "fiberglass" top was used? The front lip looks really similar to the '76 and up tops.

Not sure what you mean by "first?" There was never a factory fiberglass hardtop offered for CJ5s. The "first" would have been from one of the several aftermarket companies that made them, and many companies made versions for both 55-75 and 76-83 CJ5s.

To the OP: Without having a windshield on that tub it's really hard to tell.

It sure looks like a 76-83. Quite frankly, I've never seen a pre-76 'glass top. All the early CJ5 tops seem to be Myers/steel.

Has anyone ever successfully used set of soft doors with an aftermarket top for a cj5? Seems like that'd be pretty cool lookin'.
