Yes i'm going to dig up a old thread, but figure its better than posting a whole new one.

After doing this how hard, in your opinion, would it be to wrap just the flares of my TJ. I think, when I find the right pattern, it would look good on my dark green with tan top and soon black wheels. I don't know tho, read most of your thread and seems the hard curves maybe tough. How many sheets, if more than one, would be needed to do 4 flares excluding the flare extensions.

Has anyone done a set of flares?

thanks in advance.

the hardest part of doing TJ flares will be the compound curves where they not only curve to make the lip, but turn down at the same time. I won a sign shop and do wraps for a living, and you picked the more difficult part to wrap. You'll also want some tae primer to coat the flares with to make the wrap stick well snce they are popped out of a mold and typically don;t stick as well as a perfectly smooth metal surface.

Wrapping the flares would be a major pain escpecially if you have never done it before.

If you actually managed to get them wrapped, I don't believe it would last very long. If you are anal like I am, you will spend a lot of time going back and fixing and touching up wrinkles and peel ups.

BUT

I have what I think is a better solution for you. Have your flares camo dipped. EXAMPLE HERE --> www.camo-solutions.com

I saw this process demonstrated on Orange County Choppers. Pretty amazing process and beats trying to wrap the flares.

Currently I have the hood pulled off to repair the crack along the front edge where the brown stain is in the first picture. The brown stain is the PO's attempt to fix by just pouring resin over the crack.

I am still having problems with the wrap releasing on the grill where the deep curves are at the top and bottom.

I have wrapped it two times trying different techniques, but nothing seems to work.

So, I've decided to pull the wrap off the grill and paint it with the same black that I used on the hard top and headlight bezels and just leave it at that.
what if you wrapped it, bought some grill inserts and painted those black? it would help keep the wrap from coming up and kinda put a nice touch to it.

Thanks for deciding my tough choice for me. A neighbor of mine has his old Chevy camo wrapped and I always wondered what a Jeep would look like. I really want to do something drastic instead of just plain black (my jeeps color) and had considered several options. I love the black break up you did and will definitley leave the grille that way if I do this!!!! Either way, you did an awesome job and it looks really good.

This is cool,
So, It has been quite a while, and so, how well is this thing holding up? I would love to do this, as long as no big scratches can occur easily...

Thanks.

Mine has held up fine, but it hasn't been out of the garage much.

If you are going to drive head on through heavy brush, tree branches or black locust like we have here - I wouldn't recommend vinyl.

Limbs and such just brushing against it isn't going to hurt it - but I can see it scratching or gouging if you took a direct hit.

One good thing about it though is that it would be easy to repair.

Sweet. My YJ isn't worth a new paint job, BUT a camo wrap would look cool. And it would piss off the neighbors to boot!

You could have had everything dipped in hydrographic paint. It's what they use to get the camo patterns on guns, ATVs, ect. Here is one site that does it, there are many others. One site I found would camo dip all ATV plastics for under $500 and they clear coat it. I would imagine it wouldn't cost much more to get a whole CJ done, prob about as much as a decent paint job would cost you.
