Hey guys Can you help me out with some advice eg: what it's worth or if it'd be a good investment or not? I've been wanting a jeep and have the opportunity to pick this one up, but I don't know as much as you all. Thanks!
I don't know what the market is in OK, but down in El paso, I have seen way cleaner, original jeeps go for 6-9 k ..... TO me I could get that jeep around here if you find one in that shape for about 4-6k. I know areas are different, but most of what he has done, IS basic service stuff, tune up, oil leaks, etc..... nothing other than the lift and tires and few other lil do dads are upgrades. the fact the floor pans have been changed can be a indicator of other things too. check the frame over really good, along with the tub and windshield frame. But I wouldn't give that much, not even close. ...... but that's me
Just to give you an idea..... this sold for 7.5k down here .... and its clean... mostly original ... with after market bumpers, tires, wheels, and cage, tub was rhino lined and motor has some dress ups .... but for the most part all original drive line
The word "restored" in the title..... that jeep is "rebuilt" or better yet modified with lift, tires, lights, different paint , etc.
To YOU, it's worth whatever you want to pay and IF the stuff done to it is what you want or what you would have done and your ok paying the previous owner for doing it for you. ( and is it done right?)
To OTHERS, the value will fluctuate, but most people regard a clean stock unmolested jeep to hold higher value.
It looks like a worn 1983 258 that has been tarted up. Corners have probably been cut in the "rebuild" and you may find all sorts of nasties lurking under there.
For instance I note the bedliner paint finish where corners have been cut. The job must have cost nearly $100 but did not extend to the interior so it is now beige on the outside and red in the in. Whilst you could finish it off for him, a days work, I suggest it was put on to cover the mess of an exterior.
I have nothing against bedliner, it is a hard wearing polyurethane and with minimal prep can look quite good. Due to a mix up in Bahasa Indonesia between "atas" and "atap" and "lantai" my painter used my hoarded bedliner on the roll bar and bumpers and engine bay but not the floor on my recent rebuild and it turned out very well, hard wearing and long lasting. IF you want a cheap matt finish it has its place, but you still have to mask up and prepare.
You will not be buying an investment, it looks like a good hobby and trail vehicle but has already been half beaten to death.,
Sometimes you could even get it for a few thousand less if you are patient. I bet you could get it for 9k and spend the rest getting it home. Just a suggestion. If I were to do it all again I'd look high and low in the winter for the right Jeep and I'd be willing to throw it on a trailer to get it home.
I'd look for something with the right axles and drive train. For example mine was an 81 and had the narrow track. I swapped in a wide track Dana 30 and a Dana 44 in the rear. (I would have been fine with a 1 piece AMC 20) I had an Iron Duke 4 Banger with the SR4 tranny. I put in a 258 and a T5.
I could have saved myself a ton of time and money getting one with the setup I wanted. I could have rebuilt all those components for much less than I spent getting them replaced. Again... look for the setup you want long term and find one in good condition. You may think you are not going to do much to upgrade now... but a few years down the road and 15k later... I'm still spending money... and so are 99% of people on this message board.
sounds like if it all works out, you could talk him into trading his 10.2K jeep for your 7.5K car and have and be the proud owner of a 5K Jeep...covered in bedliner
The bedliner destroys the value, IMHO.
