To buy a CJ 7, or not to buy???

Hi guys,
i'm currently living in mexico for a buisness assignment and got a year and half left on my contract. I'm looking into buying a vehicle down here and i'm looking at a CJ 7. I was wondering if you guys could give me some pro's and cons about this vehicle. Of course the picture show's some crazy exhuast stack, but that will be sure to go. this vehicle has the 4.2L straight 6 it's 1981. The guy is asking $4500 for it. worth it?

I can only see the front from the link you posted

but that looks very clean and looks like it has a hardtop and doors as well

nothing major done to it

but doesn't seem bad imo

In my honest opinion CJ's are it. The TJ's are nice and all. But CJ's are Jeeps. That looks like a really nice one. That exhaust is hilarious but I bet it is functional. I think there is no way you could go wrong with it. The only thing that would be better, is if it was a CJ8. I love those things.

I would say for sure.. just from the parts I see in the pictures its definitely worth that much. Of course the floorboards could be rotted through and the frame cut in half for all I know... If you do buy it, you HAVE to keep the exhaust on there.... I think that is the racing setup, it gives it at least 50 hp, besides its friendly to those fellow drivers who don't want to breath exhaust all day

haha i figured he used the big exhuast for water crossings, but then i kept reading the add and he has leather power seats in it. The floorboards look arlight from the other pics, paint is worn out but no visual signs of rust. offcourse i'll find out when i take a look at it this weekend.

Pipes are definitely for high-water crossings. Might check for swim damage. Is there oil in the differential or degrading tadpoles? Also, you will get fond of the Jeep after awhile and it looks like the 'smog' has been removed. Will you be able to take it 'Home' in a year and a half and run it in your state without smog?

well if i bring it home i was going to inquire about bringing back as an offroad vehicle only. then once its back i will slow convert it to a CA legal one. still haven't made up my mind about it. I'm going to call DMV this week and get the low down make sure i can even get that sucker accross correctly, apparently even to have the vehicle registerd in the USA, i have to import it correctly, can't just drive it over then go to DMV and say its mine, apparently that doesnt fly haha
