Built a Hi Lift carrier and toolbox storage

Thought I'd share what I worked on today. I enjoy seeing everyone else's homemade "mods" so I thought I'd share mine. I have an extra toolbox taking up space in my garage, and no good storage solutions in my jeep. Instead of spending a couple hundred bucks on a locking case I decided to repurpose it.

Here is the box.


Fender well before cutting it up.


Rough cut out.


Toolbox welded into place and painted. It sits 3 inches below the top surface of the wheel well.




I then decided to build a bracket for my hi-lift jack instead of having it in the back of the jeep.

Hmmm. I think somebody, somewhere, in the future is going to hate you for cutting up that fenderwell.

Interesting idea. I don't think I could bring myself to cutting into the fender well either but if it works for you, great job. I do like the repurposing of the tool box idea and extra storage in our CJ's is always a bonus. The first thought I had would be the tire hitting the tool box when off-roading. I am assuming you checked that?

I carry a small ice-chest there. Where's your taillight?
I just carry my hi-lift inside behind the back seat.
Why didn't you just bolt the toolbox in place? With that box's bottom 'open' to snow and road spray, everydangthing inside will rust from the box 'sweating'

Both taillights are below the tire carrier. I had never seen any mounted that low before either. Maybe because it's a '74? I thought of bolting the box into place, but didn't want to give up leg room for my daughter in the back, or room for other tools/parts. The underside of the box I coated with undercoating. As far inboard as the box is, and only giving up 3 inches of clearance in the wheel well I think the tire will rub the outer part of the fender before it comes into contact with the box.

I don't plan on ever selling the jeep, so as far as someone not liking the fender cut up, if you know how to weld, anything is reversible.

Take the handle off the top now, it would clean up the look.

hey its a jeep thing. never thought of cutting in like that. but now has me thinking and i think theres nothing at all wrong with doing it. the only thing i can think of neg on the high lift mounting is that it must stick up in the air quite a bit and therefore might get caught on stuff when four wheeling. i did mine a little different and also did one for a friend mounted to his front bumper, he had a tailgate.

I like the toolbox mounting. I don't think I can use that idea on my '80 CJ5 though. The roll bar is closer and there isn't enough fender well width for a tool box there, or for it to open. I've been looking for an easy way to mount a hi-lift on my tire rack, like what you did there too. Thanks for sharing.

id of faced the tool box the other way so the latch is facing out, easy to get into form outside the jeep. some day ill rig one up to go behind my rear fold and tumble seat but for now i have the factory under pass. seat box.

When I did 'Black Betty's box I remembered from the '77 CJ 5 I had years ago when I was in the service. What with the non tailgated CJ's mounting the spare tire carrier to that flimsy sheet metal back panel the wobbling was cracking the welds at the corners of the body tub. Lacking a welder (and welding knowledge) I went to my local HVAC shop and out of 16 gauge sheet metal banged me together a simple box and with the lid $50! that measured to fit between the fenderwells.







It bolts to the floor in place of the rear seat (useless for folks taller than 3' anyway) and using longer mounting bolts mounted the spare tire mount through the sheet metal of the tub, thus supporting it firmly. Not to mention it makes for a great bass box, when lined with Dynamat to take care of any rattles. Later, I added a gas charged strut to hold the lid open, although, it turned out to be stiffer than I needed, however it keeps the lid taught and rattle free.

After I got my Hi-Lift and seeing how expensive mounting hardware was (not to mention not being able to mount inboard) I was at the hardware store and spied some Cyclone fence hardware. My inner engineer got to working and I fabbed up a gavanized mount for around $12!





I reckon I'm just a cheapskate...
