broken transfer case gear?

Ok so I'm doing a seal replacement on my dana 300, I pull the cover off and inspect the gears and I nearly faint. Spinning the shafts and checking the gears for excessive wear and worn bearings I come across this gear on the front ouput shaft. It looks broken but the same gear on the rear output is exactly the same. Someone please tell me this is how they are suppose to look! My heart dropped when I saw this.

I have most of a Dana 300 in pieces in a box somewhere in the garage. It is hard to believe that a gear would break in the shape of your picture. I took mine apart so long ago I can't remember if this is normal or not.

Ok I found this pic of the gear in question. And it would seem they are made that way, thank goodness

In short, it allows lube to inter the shaft and lube under the gears.
