Bringing home the new CJ - any suggestions where to begin?

Picking up my new 83 CJ this weekend. Anyone have a checklist of where to start...fluids, belts, hoses, etc? No idea how long it has been sitting or what needs to be replaced. Any help to make it beach ready would be great. Thanks.

If your going to just drive it the best thing you can do (and should do) is make sure you have freash fluid. Diffs, transfer, Tranny. And make sure your vents are there and free.

Start with a visual inspection of all rubber parts; look for cracking and weather checks, replace any hoses that are hard, cracked or show cracks when flexed.
Check the hose clamps for rubber that has been squeezed through the clamp (cut the hose shorter if you can replace it if you cant).
If the radiator hoses are extremely soft and squishy, or bulged; replace them

Replace the antifreeze if the vehicle is old the corrosion inhibitors are likely dead.

Check the fan belts for adjustment and replace any that are worn or hard.

Give her a grease job and change out the oil, manual transmission grease and axle grease, check for lose/worn ball joints and tie rod ends while down there (replace as required).

If an auto check the color of the tranny fluid, replace the auto tranny filter, if the fluid is brown or burnt smelling expect eventual tranny problems.

Check all fluids replace any that show contamination, top off any that are low.

Repack the front wheel bearings, check the brakes while you are at it; replace if worn.

Enjoy!
