Break lights?

I bought an 85 CJ7 two days ago and the break lights don't work. The turn signals and reverse lights do work, just not the break lights. Checked the fuse, bulb, and the break switch under the pedal. All good to go. traced the wire, it seems fine. It has trailer wires on it that trace into the wire for the rear lights, then run along the side to the front. But once again, turn signals and reverse lights do work so I'm stumped. Ideas?

Check your lights. Hook them up to 12v directly and see if they light up

Ck the switch on the brake pedal. for continuity.
Is the stem of the switch touching the brake pedal at all?

If the switch is touching the pedal like it should, has 12V on both sides (with the brake pedal pushed), then check power into the turn signal switch. If everything checks out, I'd say you have a bad TS switch.

His TS's both work.
Isn't the b'light switch, downstream of the TS switch?
Don't have my FSM to check the schematics, handy.

I could be wrong here, but I was under the impression that the brake light signal went through the TS switch so that the turn signals will still flash off with the brake lights on....

The stem is touching the break pedal and is constantly. Is that right? I know nothing about electrical. I can work on anything you want me to until I get to those dern wires. But I'm learning now haha. I know the actual break light switch is good because I bought a new one, but it didn't fix the problem. It didn't cause my breaks to work. So I am assuming it is in the wiring. I have a meter at home so can test continuity tonight. Also, the female that hooks onto the break light switch at the pedal has another female that doesn't have anywhere to attach, so I have no idea what that could go to. Any ideas on that?

When you press the pedal down HARD. There should be space between the pedal and end of switch's stem.
When the stem is all the way out(brake pedal push down), that completes the circuit and activates the brake lights.

Okay, when I press the breaks all the way the there is a space between the pedal and switch. The light still didn't work with the new one though. I've traced the wires along the side of the jeep and they seem solid. There is a random wire that someone crimped and covered with electrical tape behind the driver's side door that comes out of the paneling and I have no idea how to get in there to see where THAT goes. Any idea there? And any idea on the extra female chilling?

IIRC, there should be 2 wires to the brake light switch.
Get under the dash with a flashlight and a small mirror if needed, Look for another connector on the b'switch.
Be careful, that's a 'hot' circuit.

The only thing I can think of about the extra female would be for a CJ with cruise? Alot of times companies will make one wiring harness for a vehicle and use it regardless of options.

Case in point, my CJ5 which never came with an automatic or quadratrac, has the plug for the Quadratrac warning light in the engine harness.

If I had to bet, thats what I'd say you've got. Check it with a meter and see...it shouldn't have 12+ and likely won't have any continuity to ground.
