Brake light problem of my own

So not to hijack any other threads I decided to start from scratch. I'm working on my sons 79 CJ7. His brake lights stopped working. His turn signals do work. After reading some of the other threads in the last couple days I tried a few things.
I checked the fuse - OK
Removed the brake switch and checked it - OK
Placed a jumper wire in the brake switch connector - Still no brake lights. I do however have power to the connector and from there to the turn signal switch connector on the side of the column.
Here's where I gave up for the night.
Without the jumper the turn signals work. With the jumper the turn signals work, BUT, if you turn on the signal with the jumper wire in place the brake light on the opposite side comes on also (It's not flashing on that side, just a brake light). Same thing for the other side when you turn that signal on. Swapped out the 2 flashers and both work (click) when the signal is on. The emergency flashers will not come on.
So I'm thinking I may have a bad turn signal cam or a short in the column harness.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Problem solved thanks to the forum search and John Strenk's writeup on replacing the turn signal cam on this thread
